Most new 2Ls are now equipped with #480 lamps (black with "480" in printed yellow) and come packaged with Duracell 123s which work perfectly. The problem comes when you use Surefire 123s whose + nipple often isn't prominant enough to make adequate contact with the #480's countersunk + terminal. (Note that this is almost never a problem when the #480 is used in the UK 4AA or Mini-Q40).
This photo is NOT the #480, but an earlier lamp which almost always worked in the 2L despite its famously inconsistant beam. Here's a quick fix for the #480:
Surrounding the lamp's + terminal is a gently "scalloped" circular plastic ridge. Simply file down the scallops. It isn't necessary to file them all the way down, and a complete fix usually take me 10-20 seconds.
When I give an extra lamp as a gift I carefully remove the lamp from the package (if it's a #480), file and test it, and repackage as neatly as possible.
