I am tempted by the SL Ultra Stinger at Amazon.com for $89.95 + free ship. I am looking for something not overly large or prohibitively expensive that can outthrow my Mag 5D (w/ xenon bulb).

Questions:

1) Is this as good a deal as I think it is?

2) Not too familiar with NiCad rechargeable---does it suffer from "memory effect" so that you have to discharge it all the way before re-charging?

3) Opinions pro and con on the Ultra stinger?

Thanks very much for any guidance.

Regarding the battery, I have a Stinger HP, and in the manual it actually says not to use the light when it begins to dim (that it should then be recharged), so I would say the answer is 'no', you do not have to fully discharge the battery before a recharge.

I carry one as a reserve police officer. I like it. You can get a Sub C battery that extends run time to 2 hours and you can also get a brighter bulb. It is a great price if you get both trickle chargers with it.

Where can you get this battery and brighter bulb??
Mike..

I don't have them but read about them on CPF. When you use the replacement bulb you have to change the lens to glass or it will melt. I am sure someone with more info will respond as I am interested also.

You're probably thinking of the third-party NiMH batteries that are available for the Stinger series. They'll also take longer to charge using the standard charger. The good news is that Streamlight now marks their chargers as being for use with NiCD or NiMH batteries now.

Not really on-topic but...

I was messing with my Stinger today, and when I got home I played with it against some other stuff. I never noticed how white the beam is! Not LED blueish, but not much yellow either. I have new respect for it.

Stinger?

it's 10years old...and still going strong.

My '95 vintage model is still working nightly. I did put a new switch, and I'm using two Pila cells and a TL-3 9v bulb. Works great.

At one point, I received a glass lens for it, but it shattered thru. a user induced accident. The lenses aren't user replaceable, unless you have the tool, FYI.
