Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Surge:

I think your impression that the TL has a larger hotspot at closer distances than the US is a reflection of what I also observe, and that is that the US seems to have a tighter beam overall on its tightest focus setting. There's a treetop about a block away from my house that I use for my flashlight testing. I stand in my front yard and the US lights up part of that tree top pretty well. But the TL lights up nearly the whole treetop just as well, cuz it seems to have more light output and a somewhat broader beam.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Oh, and a question: My beam image definitely shows batwings at close range. Is this the older lamp module??

Thanks.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Oh, and one more thing: My lens seems a little plastic-y. Is there a better quality one available for the TL?

flashlight lens should have them sometime around nextweek i believe

Sean,

I was impressed by these picks when you first posted them in another thread, but, I am not getting the same results. You state that the distance is 50 feet. Could you try and compare at a longer distance, lets say 100+ feet?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I've done that too but don't have any pictures. Even at about 100 yards (not feet) My TL keeps up with my US's range and with more light output.

Maybe you do have a bad battery pack, etc.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Are you saying the borofloat lenses that fit the Maglite C&D will also fit the Tigerlight? If so, that's great news. I ordered two yesterday, not realizing that they would fit my Tigerlight as well.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Just a brief comparative note comparing the Tigerlight, US and M6 at close range (under 30 feet)

The Tigerlight is just as bright as the US when the US is tightly focused, but puts out significantly "more" light. My Tigerlight has a very small (6" - 8" at 24 feet) intense "nuclear" hot spot in the middle of its regular hotspot plus a very bright surround.

However, under 30 feet the M6 literally and with no exaggeration "obliterates" the Tigerlight. When I have a chance to perform longer throw tests
I expect similar results to others in this and other T light threads.

The Tigerlight's great advantage is large quantities of big diameter intense light at medium and long distance in a relatively short, front pocketable package with no observeable diminution in brightness for at least 45 minutes.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

I've gotten very similar results to Brightnorms's. My M6 in unparalleled by all my other lights at close range. It puts out as Bushman once said to me, "a wall of light." My Tigerlight will definitely out-throw it though. Beam is very similar to Brightnorm's description too. The lenses for the Mags won't fit the Tigerlight. Flashlightlens said that those for the Tigerlight were slightly larger (around 55mm I think), and he would probably anounce availability later this week.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I emailed Randy at Tigerlight about this very question. I haven't received a response yet.

Also, better lenses are suppose to be coming out but in the meantime I replaced mine with the US lense. It fits perfect. Can get them from brightguy.com for $1. The quality is about the same as the original but it makes for a cheap replacement if you damage it.

I like to ask again, what color are everyones battery packs? I heard of blue and white. I'm trying to determine if I got an old pack.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Received a call today from Dan at Tactical Warehouse regarding my observations about the Tigerlight vs The Ultra Stinger.

I have to say that Dan is a pleasure speaking with and he cares about customer satisfaction! He went out of his way to help me with my concerns.

I highly reccommend anyone who is considering purchasing a Tigerlight to give Dan a call.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

I peeked down thru the rubber shock thing on mine and it looks to be blue.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

No question that Dan at Tactical Warehouse is a good guy to deal with.

With my US tightly focused the spot seems as bright as the TL's spot, but the TL's spot is larger and the corona illuminates the surroundings at closer ranges better.

I have the 8" FBOP TL. The US feels long to me and the diameter is a little small. The TL is the size I'd expect from a 2D light at the US looks like a 6C light or so. The TL will be more comfortable to people with large hands and the US to people with smaller hands.

The TL's switch is in an unusual position near the tail on the barrel. It's at the opposite end of the light from your thumb as you hold it. There is a good reason for this I suppose. This isn't a problem; it's just unfamiliar to me.

The TL does require considerable force to insert into the charger and the contacts are near the tail and not centered on the light. It's not a big deal but there is room for improvement.

The FBOP TL can stand on its tail to act as an "emergency candle". This is valuable to me: during a power outage I can sit it on a table and illuminate an entire room for easy movement. The US has a flat tail too but the narrow tail and long body make for a much smaller tip angle.

Both lights are great lights and nobody will be disappointed with either one. If I have to pick one I pick the TL for its feel in my hands, the larger spot and the emergency candle capability, but I don't feel that I lose anything significant when I use the US.

Honorable mention has to go to the PrincetonTec Surge. If you haven't got TL or US money, the Surge is bright and solid. It has zero intimidation factor, no charger connections and is not as bright – but it does have a < $25 price tag.

Of course, all of these lights are whimpering in the corner right now, for they know that in a few hours a new sheriff arrives in town via UPS – an X990 is coming and will show the pretenders who's stud and who's dud.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

james, what is an X990?

i don't know why everybody thinks the TL is too heavy, it was actually lighter than i was expecting. it's one bright mutha!

yes, the charger needs improvement. i would like to see the diameter a little skinnier too. the diameter of my sl20x seemed about right.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Just received the 11" TL shipped directly from TL (bought through Dan @ Tactical Warehouse - you will not go wrong trading with him). My battery pack is white and my box does not mention Mag charger or US. It did have an initial charge that was pretty bright.

Considering that I am new to this, my initial observations are similar to others. Don't particularly like the charger because it feels cheap and is hard to snap the light in to. The light doesn't feel to big to me and the switch, while different, will not be hard to adjust to. It also doesn't seem too heavy to me compared to a Mag 3D. The lens is super flimsy and seems really cheap. Can't really judge the beam quality because it wasn't fully charged until this morning. It did seem to have batwings at close range though. I will shine it into the Texas sky and around the farm tonight to get a better idea. Overall, I am happy with the purchase and look forward to putting it to use.

Question: The instructions (who reads those anyway) said not to leave the light in the charger once fully charged if you are not going to use it regularly. Why is that? What happens if you do? It said that once out of the charger, the light loses 1%-2% power/day. I don't want to not use the light for a week or so and when I need it, it not be fully charged. Any thoughts?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sorry - joke. It's an entirely different class of light. If you approach a bad guy with one he's a lot more afraid you'll drop it on his foot than hit him over the head. See the HID forum's Superlight thread.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Nice review, however the US is only about a half inch longer than a 3 C-cell MagLite.

Re: Ultra Stinger vs Tigerlight!

Just my observation of the 11" TL. If they had threaded the tube that holds the pepper spray onto the light, & made a threaded cap, you could switch from pepper spray to non-peper spray light. You wouldn't need to make a choice when purchaseing the light. TX

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sorry – I was speaking generally and should have avoided that language. I've never seen a C maglite of any length. A quick visual check shows the barrel is about 5 C cells long, so with a spring I should have called it a body long enough for four C cells.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">My bad, you didn't mention MagLite at all.
I had just taken one out of the car and it was nearby when I read your post. Just made a quick comparison of the two lights. Mag uses a lot of space for the switch assy.

Greg
