I had a similar issue and thought I had a bad cell. What fixed it for me was leaving the cells inside and pulling out the power supply cord for the unit while it was plugged into the wall. I waited a few seconds and plugged it right back in and it has worked since then without further problems.
The ironic part was after it happened, I was telling a buddy of mine who I am slowly leading down the flashlight addiction road what happened and his unit did the exact same thing. It was fixed the same way.
