Update the Kroma?

Should Surefire update the Kroma

In my humble opinion, the Surefire Kroma is one of the best flashlights available today. That is to say, the concept of the Kroma is one of the best available, the reality is really starting to show its age. Why is it in a world where Q5 bin Crees are rapidly becoming the norm is the Kroma still using a technologically outdated Luxeon III producing an inefficient 50 lumens for only an hour and a half? Bare minimum I think that Surefire would be doing themselves a favor by swapping out the Luxeon for one of the newer offerings by SSC for drastically increased efficiency. It would also be useful, I believe, to rework the levels a touch to provide a better balance in output between brightness and efficiency once a switch like that is undertaken.

The purpose of this thread is to begin a petition that I will forward to my contacts at Surefire (and hopefully all of you will do the same) in order to hopefully bring their attention back to bear on this fantastic light that has been ignored in recent years.

What do you think?

I like the idea of an updated Kroma, and would love to have mine updated/modded at some point. But Surefire has shown/previewed too many other lights in the last few catalogs that interest me more, and I'd rather see those reach the market.

SureFire is behind schedule for delaying the release of a number of new lights, is it a good idea to add another item on their plate? :duh2:

My guess is that they'll probably just update it in due course without making a major announcement about it, as their existing stocks of Kromas run low, the same way they did with the U2. But that's only a guess.

Regarding efficency it definitly needs an update. I don´t think it will be updated regarding it´s output since the 50 lumens mainbeam wasn´t too bright even when the Kroma hit the market back in 2006. Even though it would be much appreciated!

I would also like an updated Kroma, however I don't think it's going to happen..

But I will most likely get a K2-MS anyway

I can not understand what SF was thinking when they were designing the light? The main beam was a big miss in the design. If an updated Kroma can at least pack the same heat as an E2DL or even better, then it will be one of the best functional lights ever to be created. Can you imagine a Korma with the M3TL main light?... You would never need another light!

Sounds fine an dandy but I think first we should let Surefire get the M3TL out to market before making a M3TL-Kroma baby

Well, the Kroma wasn´t designed for a bright high beam. They could have made the Kroma´s high beam much brighter back then (100 lumens at least) but the light itself was designed for low light activities. And for that reason I don´t think they´ll update it with much more output but rather make it more efficient with better runtime if they are going to update it at all.

Last month, I sent a Kroma MS to Milky Labs. The plan: replace the blue LEDs with white ones, and upgrade the main LED.

I'll give you a report when it returns (here's hoping that's soon!).

I like owning the Kroma for its Swiss Army Knife angle, bu I never use it as is.

You will love the 3mm white LED's in your KROMA. Very smooth, wide beam charachteristics. Very little artifacts. Absolutely excellent for flood-beam applications. I have considered having Milky do that to my KROMA as well. (As it stands, he will be modding my PKEF C5K turbo head.) We would love to see some :kewlpics:! :D

I have a Kroma MS. What I would like, and maybe I should send it to Milky, is UV instead of IR.

+1, I talked to milky about this (and a upgraded main led) but I wasn't willing to take the chance on breaking the dedent selector ring switch. He can't promise it won't break and he's done a fairly few Kroma upgrades. I have no doubt he'd do the best he could but I just wasn't willing at that time to take the risk.

Maybe I'll think about it again in the future, my K2MS doesn't see much use at all.

The Kroma's influence seems to have diversified so much that I wonder if they'd bother to ever update it.

The new A2L's & Vampires may fill out their roles better.

A new Kroma (or diversified line of them) would be cool, so long as it packs a minimum of two colors along the main white beam.
TIR has come a ways since those days as well.

I wouldn't expect a new K2 anytime soon :(

I'd definitely be interested in an updated Kroma. Whether it was a simple upgrade to E2DL/LX2 brightness/efficiency/runtime for the main beam, or something more complex (e.g., different optics, updated body aesthetics), I think it'd be awesome.

Personally, I'd love to have a Kroma with the brightness/efficiency of the LX2, the same optic as all the current L- and E-series lights, and 3mm red, blue and yellow-green secondary LED's. (I could live with IR in there as well, as with the Mil-Spec, but I'd never use them.) If this light were sufficiently small, I think it would easily become my primary and favorite EDC.

So, I definitely would like to see an updated Kroma, and provided the proper characteristics (brightness, beam, dimensions, etc.) it would be a must-buy for me. I don't feel an urgent need for this update to happen, and don't expect it to be soon, but I would like to see it at some point.
