hello candlepower doods, long time..been away.

http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=6295736

i have a couple of these i bought for $10 each on ebay
after getting a great clearance deal on a Skil 18 LI-IOn
drill and saw set.
I have purchased an 18v Cree Q5 "drop-in" with the intent of retrofitting it into the Skil light somehow.
currently the plan is to epoxy-putty a 1/2" conduit ring-nut onto the back of the reflector. the pill from the
drop-in sort of but sloppily of course threads into the ring nut and will need some adhesive to lock its focus depth when i find that spot.

i am already unhappy tho with the results of a hand holding the pill set into the reflector opening and its clear now that LEDS require a different parabola than do incandescents due to less side emission.

the 3" ? reflector is metal and i may be able to get a plumber or tools to open to hole and thread it to match the pill to avoid the conduit nut but that doesnt change the reflector performance so i think i may just thread the drop-in one inch reflector onto the pill inside the larger reflector that just gives me an oversized 1" flashlight with big batteries. and wastes the 3" reflector entirely.

my question is do seconday optics solve the issue?
i've seem what looks like 2nd lenses offered on DX
that seem to just fit over the emitters existing lens?

i have also been looking at the Ultrafire "recoil" model that points the emitter inward toward the reflector
and tune the output for farther distance. am wondering if these incandescent reflectors are good candidates for recoil mods. i relaize the pill will be too large for that and would look to a bare emitter mounted on a narrow bolt head with a couple extra nuts mounted thru a small hole i would drill in the plastic lens center and would offer a lot of depth adjustability.

also i have this 6v lantern with a big ole pretty 5"? reflector i hate to throw away and wondered if i can update it also...perhaps recoil style.

question: does the incandescent reflector make a good recoil light or does the "hole" for the intended lamp
suck all the effectiveness out of the idea?
perhaps a tiny convex or concave mirror would fix it?

also while i have your attention,,
i think these are Luxeons?

i bought them thru a link here 3 yrs ago or maybe even more for a buck apiece which was really cheap back then.. was wondering how hard they can be driven?

edit: i think i found they are "batwings"? and found an overdriving thread that sugested 1000 Ma if they are first gen and maybe 1500 Ma for 2nd or 3rd?

with heatsinking of course.

Re: mod worthy?

You posted the thread in the wrong forum, and then you cross-posted a pointer thread to it. Instead, you should have asked a moderator to move the thread.

I'm merging the two and putting the combined thread where it obviously belongs, in H&M. Please read the Rules and take more care where you post.
