For those out there that don't already have a few of these you might just find one in your local Dollar Tree. It works about as you'd expect, but at least the price is right.

I've had a few of those, and still have one left working. They used to be common in our 'everything £1' shops but I've not seen them for a while. They seem to get quite hot and burn out if left plugged in for very long periods, but they are pretty cool.

I cut mine apart and installed 2xCREE XR-E P4s on in in parallel long ago... with a 10 ohm resistor they draw about 125ma altogether and boy talk about an improvement.

only thing is the USB port isn't designed for this method of structural support so I had to make a stand for it:shrug:

You are right about the heat. It's been running only about fifteen minutes and is almost hot. Can't imagine it will live long like this. I do like it in action. There's a small diffuser cap on the end that does a pretty good job whitening and spreading the beam.

I've been using one (mine is mostly silver/chrome and a computer-gray colored USB plug) for a couple of months and gets at least 5 hours of use everyday.

The original LED lasted maybe around 2 weeks till it dimmed considerably. I've modified it since with a nichia LED and changed the resistor which limits the current to around 20ma.
