UV LED lifetime

The Nichia ones were rated for 500 hours when they first came out. Now they are rated for around 2,000 hours to half-life.

The reason UV LEDs poop out so quickly is because the higher energy photons making up the UV light tend to break down the atomic bonds in the GaN lattice, changing them into clots of inactive elements; the same way sunlight fades bright colors out of brightly colored plastics, curtains, and couch cussions.
