UV LED

I'd recommend starting at Craig's great LED website:
http://ledmuseum.home.att.net

Enter the site, then click on "Ultraviolet" at the top of the page.

You can get these little buggers from Nichia:
http://www.nichia.com (USA) http://www.nichia.co.jp (Japan)

Craig mentions that they're definitely not cheap. They can be quite dangerous as well, as UV light is particularly harmful to your eyes.

Re: UV LEDs
Yes, u can buy the UV LED from Nichia, but it's only th
LED by itself (no flashlght or batteries), and it costs about 34 bucks!
Suggest u check out www.maxmax.com(also listed on
craig's site) for what is essentially the Streamlight Stylus with UV LED installed
-ready to go for only $49.95.
p.s. -do use with CAUTION, as
it is GENUINE UV!!!
-I am ordering one, and will
comment on it later.

Other than messing up your eyes, and seeing invisible inks what else would they be good for?

Tanning, 1 square centimeter at a time?

Just kidding.

It seems that Nichia UV LED is an interim step on the path to long-lasting, cheap UV semiconductor lasers, something particularly important for very high density optical storage.

Last December or so, I bought a Photon II in UV on ebay for $35.00 PPD.
This is cheaper than going through LRI (they're backordered anyway) and may be one way to get a UV LED in your hands without all the associated paperwork and heartache.

The UV Photon comes in the "covert" style case, and uses a Nichia NSHU550E (the narrow-beam style) UV LED. It uses a pair of CR2016 lithiums, which can be found rather cheaply if you know where to look.

cr2016's available at sears hardware for $2.15 each. is that reasonable?

You can get them on E-Bay, 25 of them for 9.99. That is pretty common. I got mine there and still have a bunch left.

Re: Li coin cells-#2016,2025,
2032 etc.
U can buy as few as u need from listed outlets on Brock's page, at less than a
buck each,-try:
All Electronics, B.G.Micro,
Electronic Goldmine, Hosfelt.
I use a lot of these, and haven't had to pay Radio Shaft ($2.79ea) for them.

What do you use your UV flashlights for?

Also, anyone know how strong the UV is compared to, let's say, noon time sun on a summer day in Florida.

Just curious.

What?! They make a Photon II in UV? I have only seen the Photon I's in UV...
