I handled one of those a couple weeks after getting my h-priv. I thought darn. I couldn't believe it took two cells

Been a couple of weeks of use now vicv and not put it down. Not once reverted back to my old faithful kanger platinum. The size is no issue for me and vape time now is lasting most of the day.

Being content(still am tbh) with the platinum and crown tank all this time i have not been looking at mods. Then last week someone had a new SMOK alien, had a go and impressed for the size and being a dual cell. Called the Alien, gut in work had a black with red surround but i wanted a silver..............little searching and found one. No kit here, just the mod as i have a few SMOK tanks anyway.

Size comp and display............I really like the display, has everything displayed from power, display for each cell(can see it drop slightly under load then bounce back),PCB temp and the amps used. Right now(not in this pic) it shows 0.687ohms and 4.979a.

Been used for 2 days solid which says a lot to me, most if not "just right" last a few hours before reverting back to the trusted platinum. This works well all round, bonus of vape time, size when out and about is cope-able...........lot more so than the H-Priv.

smok better put the smok TFV8 inside, not the baby TFV8

I think they put the baby in as its a compact mod, so right not the tfv8 has to be bought separate unless a seller/shop offers you the options to customise your kit.

Have i ever mentioned i am clumsy................well friday i decided it would be a good idea to drop the Alien on the floor. Of course it fell angled on the tank and split the mod near the top part(think a mouth on old shoes that talk). Quickly i thought i need another mod(only have 5 spare anyway). Quick look around and nothing(for me) can beat this little alien mod. So another was ordered and the silver glued..................So its a back up now(for the alien that is as have a few others )

Decided black this time, might be able to make out the glue on the silver where its been repaired. Normal good super glue type would not hold it as it is kind of springy(under retention). This stuff(the name escapes me) you drip on like normal glue, then use a spray can to cure.............seconds it took and solid!

Penguin works well for me.
The pre-made coil kit works pretty well for this beginner.

IMG_20180723_193201.jpg

I started out trying to replace cigarettes with a nice tobacco flavor'd Cue brand e-cig. Years ago I did cig-a-likes and smoked very infrequently. With the Fuma, no trial and error timing of when to toke vs push the cooker button was required. Like a tabacco stick you took a drag and the tip glowed. When it got low the tip flashed. A 5 pack of cartridges was $10. Now in the beginning a cartridge had a massive 24mg of cigarette fix. One hit and you walk around stoned for about an hour. So a cartridge lasted 3-4 days and a pack of cigarettes lasted a week instead of a day.

Trouble was the cartridge would leak or pop. After having one drool down my face a few times the novelty wore off. Back to old faithful the tobacco stick.

About 7 years later I decided to try out one again. I went looking for a modern cig-a-like. Still junk, yet cartridges cost more than a pack of smokes and rumored to still leak.

A proprietor of a tobacco store told me about the Cue. I did not like the button idea where you have to practice timing inhale vs the amount of vape. 2 or 3 days later I could get a nice "drag" without choking for 10 minutes. The substitute now deserved a sticker.

Now Mrs. Fixer is alergic to poly-glycol. And being cool like a polar bears toenails she did not want to smoke around me while I adapt to the new way. Plus whenever I get a new toy she wants one too. So knowing Cue does a 50/50 blend I went looking online for ways to refill my Cue. There were lots of methods on youtube by stoners looking to sneak a toke. I also found there are a multitude of PG/VG blends. Not wanting to saddle the Mrs with a complicated process we went searching for a refillable way. I like the Cue, yet also wanted to try a gateway type of vape to eventually customize. My brother builds his own this n that plus makes his own juice so a teacher is available.

So Mrs. Fixer and I went to a vape store and told the proprietor what she wanted. The young lady showed us a nice teardrop thing that smokes like a cig-a-like. And it's refillable but.... she preferred something similar to the Cue. Ironically she is a big fan of Penguins.

My brother had mentioned one called 'the Penguin' so we asked the proprietor if they had one. The owner pops out from behind a door saying "we sell out on those in a day". "Got one left". She was puffing on one and offered to let the Mrs try it. I ended up buying that one and Mrs. Fixer the remaining new one.

Yesterday while stuck in traffic my Penguin started tasting like burnt paper. I also noticed I needed a bigger drag. While stuck I texted my brother. He advised me how to clean the coil pack. While still sitting on a 2 lane parking lot usually called a highway I found a used up toothbrush in the console of my truck. Yes, I carry stuff like that, duct tape, and other MecGyver stuff. 30 seconds later my Penguin was hitting like new and sitting in traffic no longer seemed so aggrevating. The sky was now blue-r and songs on the radio were more groovey. Yay!!

My goal of reducing tobacco sticks down to a few a day is on track already. But the idea of modding my own style of vape tool is on hold until I figure out a way to vape a flashlight. A side switched AA size perhaps. No crazy 200+ watt number, but a nice low resistance deal-ee-o with a pocket clip.

Oh, at work the other day the contractor's safety man was outside the office building toking on his vape. He's one of those type who looks like he's on fire after taking a hit. Big ole cloud erupts from his lungs. Some 75 feet away I smelled a nice sweet aroma. So I asked what he was using. It turns out he was digging on the same strawberry lemonade I have in the Penguin. He uses one of those "pens" about the size of a claw hammer handle, 18650 powered deals that holds a shot glass amount of liquid. I laughed and asked how many weeks his lasts.... he said "a day or two". lol.
He took a 30 second drag and blew out steam so thick I couldn't see him from 5 feet away. I just chuckled inside thinking "ah, yeah young lungs".... He said he is tobacco free for over a year. The young lady at the vape store said her last cigarette was September last year. My goal is by Thanksgiving.

Fantastic stuff Mike, you certainly have the right mind set..........................you can do anything you want!

Defo best to keep the coils/ fluid swapping till later on, just get use to the device first. Making juice takes literaly a minute, PG, VG, nic VG and flavour(PG). Measuring tube, some bottles................easy stuff.

Now the worst bit is finding that perfect flavour , i went through endless flavours over the years. For a while now, Heisenberg has been fine for me.

Latest i have been using a few weeks and been excellent

My brother says he builds stuff when he wants a cigarette. He stopped smoking again when I showed him my Cue. Evidently he'd put away his vape stuff and when I told him what I was doing he pulled out his stuff and resumed vaping instead.

IMG_20180728_204045.jpg

Bought a pink tank for pink tasting stuff like berrys and unicorn poop.
Black tank(s) will be various tobaccos, and blue tanks will go to Mrs. Fixer for hers.

Very cool mr fixer, hopefully between you and your bro, you can help each other along the journey.

I do recommend a back up or 2 though(probably already have knowing you lol). I dont mean 500 or them like flashlights haha. But a spare in works truck for example, spare charger for on the go and cells if needed. 1 is defo 0 when it comes to vaping, especially if its keeping you off those cigs. Running out of juice, mah or loosing a set up can be the worst thing ever. My daily carry juice is in a 100ml bottle, lasts me a little over a week on the power i use. Lower the ohm and crazier the build..................like running a v12 instead of a v6 turbo. Some guilds and once over 100w, can literally eat a 5ml tank in a handful of vapes=not good .

As i vape regular, red hot tanks, crazy clouds are not for me. I just want a steady vape, one i can vape all day every day without heat/eating juice fast and clouds everywhere. My W tends to be 15w-25w tank depending on a dual cell mod. I still swap the cells once a day even then. Single cell mods are no use to me these days, i would need to take a spare 2 or 3 cells everywhere. Just easier to carry them in a mod.

Ones in use have tanks, the bubble glass 5ml zeus is a single clapton coil, the other a dual coil build
clMfVljl.jpg

Can see my 100ml bottle for ease(and my fav mug):) Other mods are just spare ones, there are a good few more as Rach is using two of the others .

My brother stopped by today and brought his mod. He had a supply bag with him about the size of a DVD case. Nice little setup with lots of storage. Gotta get me one of those.

He showed me some of his tricks and tips along with going over lots of know how.

He hit his 2x 18650 powered peace pipe while I hit on my portable pods. After 2 hours he had used about half a 6 ml tank. I still have 50% of a 3 ml cartridge on day 10.

I took a puff off his and GOOD GOSH!!! That thing was really smooth. But my dining room looked like someone left a roast in the oven 5 hours too long. Before that I did not understand how old smokers don't choke half to death, but heck all that steam was smoother than a mini hit off my Cue.

He uses some kinda mesh coils, a wood/cotton combo wick, 50+/- watts and 1.12 ohms. At least with the Cocoa Puff juice. Then he put in something that tastes like Fruit Stripe gum and dialed in the watts to his favorite number.

He answered a bunch of my questions from days gone by... the rumors of metal lung, FDA takeover and stuff like that. He also told me of an old school mate we call Bionic Barry who switched to tobacco vape 4 years ago and still uses only that type. Bionic Barry seems to have a skeleton made of steel because he's one tough dude. More major wipe outs than Evel Kneivel yet walks away everytime. Heck one time his parachute got caught in an updraft and he crashed into a metal building so hard it left his imprint.... and although dazed for a few days, not a scratch. Motorcycle wrecks, car crashes, etc but all were freak events in the life of a pretty level headed guy with the darndest luck.
Anyway it seems Barry hasn't smoked in a few years now.

Damn, is Barry lucky or not lucky? Haha That’s a lot of ouch!

Well your kid seems to know his stuff, I find a daily 15-25w tank build dependant good for my needs. Still I swap out my dual cells at least once a day for fresh. Using 40+w it would be even more regular. VG helps the smooth vape, of course the coils used do to. I am using a single 0.5 ohm Clapton’s in one tank, dual twisted 2x 0.3ohm=0.15ohm in the other.

Trying the upgrade to the Penguin called the Dolphin.
Another pod system JoyeTech calls a pod-mod. I suppose that's like calling swapping from a 123 to a AA in a Streamlight dual fuel light "a modification". The Dolphin has 3 type of coil resistance available. 0.25, 0.6 and 1.2.
It's a 50 watt deal-ee-o that is said to start out on max and reduce power to the coil after a second, I suppose to 'jolt' the juice right off the bat and cook it at a lower temperature shortly after.

I'm using a custom mix of a melon combo and a ever so slight hint of menthol. Idea being try each of the coil types and see how that affects flavor. It seems the less resistance the more the menthol shows up. The more resistance the better the water melon shows up and the middle resistance brings out the pinapple.

I learned all that setting in a head shop yesterday embarking on samples using an E1 device and coils that mimic resistances available for my Penguin and Dolphin.

Setting next to a hippy chick who was toking a cotton candy type flavor but swears it tastes like starburst candy my brain could not take anymore. Aaauurgh!! I had to go.

Later I watched the vape geek completely disasseble a dolphin and give it a review.
IMG_20180801_114146.jpg

Enjoyable time spent versus the so-called conversation with a 20 something year old who believes unicorns should be considered an endangered species and marihuana can cure toe-jam. I also decided a bottle of the flavor the geek was huffing on.... butter pecan almond tobacco needs to be on the way to my home.

When I left the head shop I realized they had charged me for 1 dolphin when I had bought 2. I returned and told the proprietor what had happened. He says "soooooo, what are you saying?". I replied they had undercharged me. He says "sooooooo, what do you want to do?"..... I told him I wanted to make it right. He says "soooooo, how do we do that?".... "And that folks is why they call it dope" ran through my head as I handed him the money to pay for the second one.

Glad your getting into it mr fixer. Coils wise, once bellow 1ohm it’s sub ohm. Requires more W to fire, uses more juice and cell mah. But with the right mix, a much better vape. More of a hit, you can use less nicotine than what you would with above ohm coils(strongly advised to use less strength with sub ohm). So for example, you maybe using 18mg and a 1.6ohm coil, using a 0.6ohm, then 6mg will be plenty .

Then single coils, dual, triple ,quad and it goes on. Dual coils are a nice vape, I tend to like 2x0.5ohm for a 0.25ohm vape. Then there are all types of coils, twisted, tiger, alien, alien Clapton and endless options haha.

Ended up sticking a 0.60 ohm coil in my little pod. It came with a 1.2 and 0.25. I had some extra 0.6's. Using 3ml liquid when everyone said 6 would be best. And with a 1.25 I could agree. Yet with 0.25 or 0.6 the 3 ml is dandy. Gives me a nice drag, and cooks the flavor of a 70/30 better than the 1.20 too. I tried the 0.25 but using a basic device without wattage or temp control it was just not cooking the combo flavors to my liking.

In the states there's a chain called Avail. I stumbled upon a nice grape combo I like a lot. Sour grape and sweet grape. With the 0.6 I get a wee bit more sour than sweet flavor, yet a sweet aroma in my nose and after taste. At 0.25 it was too sour. At 1.20 it was too sweet.

So that is two sauces I've preffered the 0.60. The first was a watermelon, pinapple, menthol where 0.25 was way too much menthol.

I can see myself eventually building a device. But unlike flashlights I prefer not to go into debt with this new hobby. So part of my sampling at shops is also trying out their rigs too. So far each shop I have visited has had a differing type of device. So I'm also enquiring which this or that it uses to cook the juices I'm sampling.

Mods, pods and lights.

RIP Smok tank. It rolled off the hood of my truck during a photo shoot and "smash"!!! Probably going to give it to my big cloud making brother anyway (after glass is replaced).

IMG_20180808_061004.jpg

Shortly after this was taken.

Only qualm I'm starting to note with vaping is flooded chambers and wet hits. I'm supposing it is a mouth to lung thing because it has plagued every device I use. Mods and pods.

Most (maybe all) sub ohm tanks are direct to lung. Typical smoking is mouth to lung , sub Vape lung. I found it did not take long to adjust, just a little time. Now anything else feels weird.

Damn sorry to hear, that’s the only problem with tanks, you have to get very lucky with a drop/fall for it to survive. Often you do get a spare glass in the box though.

I have had a few smash, many mods fail after drops. Main reason of the latest one being ip67. Hoping it will last me a few drops and dings haha. In fact I did drop it on the first day, broke a drop tip, nothing else luckily!.

Another option mr fixer, experiment with air hole, wide open will be of course an airy Vape. This will help reduce the chance of drawing juice in being a less tight draw.

With rebuildable coils, you can kind of counter the flooding by using more wick. It’s certainly a lot of trial and error, but when it’s rlght , it’s very good.

I can see where this hobby can get expensive quickly. Frustrating at the same time until you get some things sorted out. Technology being what it is today, it can become daunting finding a device that suits ones needs and wishes. Especially for the MTL vaper. It's like lumen wars in the vape world is all about cloud wars. And you go to a vape shop for advice only to be waited on by people with frisbees inside their ear lobes and horeshoes through their nose telling you 4 coils or bust.... wick should be similar to the size of a roll of paper towels for "those awesome clouds bro".

There is also a learning curve to using them once you find one you like. I just want a good drag. I don't care if any steam is left over or not. That leads to wet chimneys and wasted liquid. I have also discovered leaking tanks are a ginormous issue. I'm starting to I should buy a tube of permatex copper for my new hobby. Is it too much to ask that I don't have a pond of 80/20 on my countertop each morning from a factory assembled tank?

I have found a couple that work great for MTL type but can be somewhat expandable for the cloud chaser. And they don't leak. At least if you are careful reassembling and don't romp down on the gaskets. One is a new twist on an old tech. The Kanger sub tanks replacement, the Top Tank which as the name implies is a top fill setup using pre-made or custom coils.
Another is by Innoken called Zenith. That one has an innovative push in coil with 2 o'rings and a sealed chamber so the only chance of leak is at the coil.

I like the Smok baby prince tfv12 a lot but getting it to stop oozing juice from both ends and from the coil pack has been daunting me thus far.

I like the Sigelei E1 enough to buy a second one. Red this time. Speaking of red I have an Innoken Kroma-A in red on the way. Comes with a Zenith tank. And using a pre-fire set up has halted the wet chimney while still providing max flavor.

A couple of nice grape sauces have made me all but forget about the cancer stick.

Yup, what started out as a smoking reduction thing may be my new obsession.....
