Hello.

I have what I can best describe as a very small problem with a Surefire E1B, but it's not something I can diagnose myself.

So, when the light hasn't been used for more than an hour or so, when I first turn it on there is a quick flicker, then it continues as normal on high. Turning it off then on again there is then no flicker. The longer it hasn't been used for, up to a few hours, the more times this happens before it settles. Not using it overnight for example and in the morning it will do it 3 or 4 times. It's almost as if the head needs to 'wake up'.

The most obvious cause would be the battery, tried that, ruled it out. I have tried numerous batteries, including nearly depleted ones and batteries that are very cold, having been in a car overnight, still the same. Once the head has 'woken up' using a different battery makes no difference, to get it to do the same thing again I have to wait a few hours.

I should probably explain more what I mean by flicker. Maybe a better description would be 1 or 2 pulses of strobe, then settling on high, so it is a very fast process, literally a case of blink and you'll miss it, but it definately does a few more depending on how long the flashlight has been out of use.

I also considered the tailcap. I had no idea how or why a tailcap not being used for a few hours would cause such a thing, but in the interests of testing I tried 2 other tailcaps and ruled it out as a different tailcap makes no difference.

Finally, it actually did this once before, shortly after I got it, but I assumed at the time that it was a battery starting to go, I changed it, and the flicker didn't happen again so I forgot about it.

If you used this E1B all day every day, but you happen to blink each morning when you first turned it on, you'd be unlikely to ever see the flicker, so it really is a minor problem. The reason I'm curious is because there is a pattern, and it's not something I've come across myself before, or read about here on the forum. So, anyone have any ideas?

After reading your post I have tested my E1B which had not been used for at least one month but it does not do what you report. Actually I have never noticed something similar.

IMO what your light does might have to do with a trace of oxidation on some contact due to humidity: the longer the rest in a humid environment the higher the probability of such problems. In case you live in a high humidity place you should try to store the light for some time in a surely dry place and see whether it plays the same trick.

Personally I would look for this thing in the switch or thereabouts. BTW have you well cleaned the edges of the body tube and the places where they make contact?

Firstly, Kilovolt, thank you for getting yours out to test.

So, I gave it a thorough clean yesterday, all threads and contacts nice and shiny new, then left it for a few hours and it didn't do it. Then later on in the day it did it again, but as usual just the tiniest of flickers at first press.

I have another E1B that is in a bag and turned on rarely. It doesn't act the same, but it is also sealed up in a bag and away from any humidity or temperature conditions.

It's not very scientific, but all I can come up with is it's just a little 'quirk'.

There is one other possiblity about the tailcaps. I must shamefully admit that I let it get quite dirty at the threads.
Actually, I'l be honest and convert that 'quite dirty' to 'very dirty and greasy'.

I fully accept any :twak: that is coming my way

It's shiny clean now, but......, I found it quite difficult to clean properly down inside the tailcap. I have only tested it with tailcaps that have previous been used on this flashlight, so would probably have a good buildup of dirt inside them. I might try to test it with tailcap that has never been dirty and is as-new, that could be the answer.

If anyone else has any input it would be appreciated :)

You're on the right track, try to eliminate the tail cap as the source of the malfunction. The fact that there was a noticeable difference with a good cleaning leads me to believe that an even better cleaning would eliminate the problem. Break out the q-tips. You might invest in deoxit and progold for the head. For good measure lube your light with this lube from Gary123. Also make sure that there isn't any anodize still left on the body at the electrical contact points.

Hey bud, just wwondering that batteries you're using? Rechargeables or primaries? E1B is for primaries only. I believe rechargeables will make the light flicker. Reason it doesn't do it when it's "warmed" up is probably due to the voltage drop for continuous use.

Also if u want to rule out your tail cap, you can take off the tailcap and use a. Paper clip to complete the circuit, see I that makes any diff.
