Victorian Fires February 2009

Edit: I started posting this as a personal account of what was happening as the fires progressed at home on Saturday and had no way of knowing what a disaster this would become. At the time it was fairly scary for us with the fires just a couple of kilometres away. In retrospect we were very lucky. I'm changing the title to reflect the national disaster this has become. The fires are still burning and people and property are still in danger.

We currently have bush fires burning all around us OK at the moment. Time 15.45 Pictures 1 2 & 3
Embers raining down, more pictures added time 16:00 Pictures 4 & 5
more pictures added time about 16:30 Pictures 6, 7 & 8
It was windy now blowing a gale about 16:43
Temperature at 16:00 peaked at 46.1 C 115 F close enough.
17:40 The wind has dropped and there has been a slight cool change, fires still burning but fortunately not be drive by the 150KPH winds 95 MPH

Keep a vigilant eye on those fires! Be ready to evacuate if necessary. Hang in there and be safe. I hope the fires die down.

The wind has turned, fires still burning, but our area is looking OK nearby areas I'm not so sure about.

Been a bit of a worry all day.

Re: Bush Fires.

Glad to hear you are out of danger currently, stay watchful, a windshift could change everything. Stay safe Norm and you all there are in our thoughts.

Re: Bush Fires.

if the wind isn't too dry, wet things down a bit with a hose...

ember is one of the annoying things about fires...all it takes is a little contact on a solvent/accelerant surface to make another mess

Re: Bush Fires.

Good luck and stay save mate! I heard on the news today some of these bushfires were even arson. How stupid are those people?

All the best

Re: Bush Fires.

I saw the fires on the TV news - they looked as serious as any I have seen, and totally uncontrollable. I hope they don't come your way - but if they do, don't leave it too late to evacuate in good time, as big fires can move very fast...

Re: 2009 Victorian Bushfires

Those are very scary photos. Thanks for posting them and keeping us informed, but I think "enjoy" isn't exactly the right word.

Re: 2009 Victorian Bushfires

Yes i think your right... i was at the pools so i didnt feel the 46°C heat but on the train home it was higher up and all you could see is smoke coming from all directions

Re: Bush Fires.

Re: Bush Fires.

I'm pretty sure my cousin survived but lost her house and everything she owns.
Extremely sorry to hear that Bruce.
I hope she was well insured.
The pics above make mine look a little tame but it was bloody scary nonetheless not knowing exactly how far away the fires were. :caution:
We had gone down to Jaycar in Springvale in the morning and just made it back just before they closed the freeway where the fire had jumped the road.

Re: Bush Fires.

Keep safe guy's last I heard on the news the death total is up to 87 :sigh: Those arsonist who lite these fires deserve to be strung up in the middle of the town were everyone get's their turn to throw a few punches before being dropped off in the middle of a burning fire since they enjoy fire so much  My prayers go out to the family's who lost their homes their loved ones and their life to these fires and god bless those fire crews they were interviewing guy's who had been on the lines for 36 hours straight. I can't imagine the feeling driving up to a burnt out car to find 6 people inside burnt to death. Keep safe I wish you guy's the best of luck.
