Voltage of 5 D MAG bulb

i want replace the standard krypton bulb with the OSRAM MINIWATT® Halogon Bulb.

Now i need the voltage of the mag-lite 5d bulb. i i sum the battery voltages i get 7,5 volts. On Brocks web-site the 5D is listet with 4,9 Volts. Who can help?

I`m not sure how true this is for MAGs or other "high performance" lights, but I have found that for a lot of cheaper lights that use Krypton PR flange bulbs, the bulb voltage (often printed on the base) is close enough- (number of cells) x 1.2 volts (not 1.5 volts as you might imagine), ie rated as if it were for NiCd cell voltage. Presumably this is so the bulb burns whiter and brighter with the higher battery voltage, at the expense of its life (otherwise you may get lifetimes the same or in excess of household bulbs), and/or possibly to account for voltage drop in AA or perhaps even C-cells resulting from the current flow.

So- going by this, in answer to your question I`d say a 5-D MAGlite would take a 6 volt bulb. Anyone who knows better- please set me straight if I`m off base here.

The problem is it depends a lot on the load of the lamp itself. So if you get a 250mA lamp it won't drop the voltage much at all, but if throw in a 1 amp lamp it will drop it a LOT, about 1.5 v difference. So as the lamps have a higher amp draw you can get a lower voltage lamp. In my 5 D Mag I run the RS HPR50, which is rated at 5.2v at 850mA. With slightly used D cells it is right about there, both in voltage and amperage. Now if you put a standard 4.8v 500mA lamp in there it will blow right away, even a HPR50 will blow in a matter of minutes with new batteries.

Ok here is my big reason for not using bright alkaline lights, they drop voltage through out their life and quickly under a 1 amp load. So in my 5 D cell Mag I use the origional lamp for about 30 minutes then change to the HPR50 for the rest of the time. A lithium light will stay pretty constant compared to alkaline anyway, and I don't have to change lamps. The Mag will dim constantly while I use it. I find that VERY irritating.

WHICH bulb would you recommend fpr everyday use. i dont want to change the buld after the first 30 min. i need a halogen or xenon buld wich can stay a whole battery lifetime in the lamp.

If you don't want to have to change the lamp I would suggest the 6.5v 850mA. Although I bet it will be very similar to the lamp that is already in the Mag? I don't know what they come with standard anymore. You could try the 5.2v 850mA, that is what I use but it might blow on new batteries, if it doesn't it will be VERY bright.
