Re: Wanted Features similar to Brinkman\'s LL LED
Well I don`t have a Brinkmann yet cos I`m in the UK (where we don`t have Wal-Marts) and am still waiting for some nice person in the US to send me one in the post for reviewing
. But I can say that those 2 lights you mention are very different from it indeed. The Batonlite is another I don`t have yet but from what I`ve read about it, its beam is bright but diffused and quite wide, good for perhaps 15-20ft but not much further. It is generally a close-up light. The LEDtronics FlashLED, 6-LED white, is one that I
do have, or at least
did until I broke it. See- it`s not just Craig that breaks lights you know
. It`s really another close-up-work light, and despite having 6 LEDs, it is also very dim. They are slightly underdriven (15-20ma each) if my memory of power drain tests is right (my notes on the white FlashLED have long since been lost unfortunately. LEDtronics- fancy donating a few more to science?
), and a Turtle 2 (2 overdriven LEDS) is apparently brighter. I wouldn`t overly reccomend FlashLEDs from my experience of the white one, as they are really quite expensive and not too bright, though it did take a 20ft fall onto concrete to break mine so they`re quite tough too.
The only LED lights that come to mind for longer range use are the Turtlelite 1 (very narrow beam, one LED, 4 AAs, quite big light) and the Pal-Gold (again one LED, smaller, 9 volt battery powered). Those may just shine 80ft but wouldn`t be too bright at that range (think like poor moonlight) and don`t have momentary switches. The Pal though, does have a 3 function switch. Dim, bright or a slow blink, plus a fourth "always On" feature in the "off" condition that makes it glow dimly (but I`ve never liked this as it drains your battery quite quicky if you use it reguarly, despite what the manufacturers might say).
LED lights in general, even the big ones, are best used for closer ranges under 50ft. Until someone comes up with a really narrow-beam lens for the Luxeon Star LED, that is.
