Hey all,

I've been waiting for a Pacific Northwest CPF get together for a few months now and haven't seen one come up yet. And I know I've seen a few members who are around Western Washington.

Unfortunately I live in a small apartment with family and don't have the ability to host a simple afternoon BBQ, so I can't offer to host an event. But since no one has spoken up yet, I figured I'd go fishing for interest (and ideas of where to meet).

I'd think starting out with something small, just a meet and eat sort of event, but of course having a place to play with our lights after dark would always be a bonus. I'd really like to meet others out there and see some new lights, mods, etc. Any interest out there?

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Hey PhantomPhoton,
Sounds like fun! I'm in Wenatchee, about 3 hours away and willing to drive up with a van full of flashlights and searchlights.

It's not getting dark until about 10pm up here so it will be a late night if we do it soon. How about a pot luck barbeque at a rural park where there's no park lights. :candle:

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Glad to hear someone is interested.

BBQ is always good, so the thing is to try and figure out where to meet up. I know a lot of municipal parks "close" at sunset. So once I get a better idea of where we might go, as by no means do we need to meet in Tacoma, I can contact the city to be sure we won't get chased out after dark by the local Law Enforcement.

Another idea would be a state park, national forest, or even making a trip up to Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, etc. There are a ton of possibilities out here. Just need some more input from interested people.

If nothing stirs up in the next week maybe I'll put a link to here in my sigline. Days are getting shorter, so we should be closer to 9 by the time we get an event together.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Bellingham here and would definitley make the trip if we got alot of people on board and tracked down a location. Im racking my brain for a place that would be fitting and I know a few around here in Bellingham at some public parks but most of these places close at 10 so I dont know how that would work. Hopefully we get some more people interested. Ill be in touch.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Damn - I was always wondering if there would be a PNW get-together, but I'm moving Aug 31st and pretty busy up till then. Have fun though!

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

I am in sumas gets pretty dark here no streetlights where i live.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Glad to see we have a few interested. :grin2:

Wow, zk188 Sumas is way up there on the border! I'd bet there's not much up there, hence it being nice and dark.

Tenfour... moving away from WA? or just moving around if you don't mind my asking. I'm not sure if we'll get things figured out before the end of August at the moment. I'm available most weekends from now till December myself. ;)

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

You guys shine your lights south. Maybe I'll be able to see them way down here.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

There's a city actually called Slaughter? Hehe, I guess it's more interesting than Boring Oregon.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Phantom: moving abroad for a couple years (wife is studying law in Brussels, Belgium). So I'm out for this one.

And, although I don't see "slaughter" on the map, I wouldn't be surprised considering other towns like Concrete, Monitor, Index, Plain, Federal Way, Sea-Tac, the list goes on ......

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Tenfour: Oh well, maybe if you move back in a couple years we can meet ya.
Good luck with the move.

It sounds like we might have to twist Carbine's Arm to come out with us :D.

So, on with brainstorming for more ideas on where we might want to light up the night sky.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

I'll be up there Latter August/Early September. But in Kent. . .

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

I live in Seattle. I'm totally up for something, maybe while it's still warmish :). I considered posting something a while ago but I guess I got distracted.

There are a few dark places in the city, we could have a barbecue at most city parks, like Magnuson. I've gone down there with my friends and blasted spotlights across Lake Washington toward Bellevue.

If we want real dark we'd need to get out of the city a bit, maybe towards Issaquah.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Why dont we shine our brightest lights up at the sky to see if we can see them at an arranged time.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

I'm over on the peninsula, about 4 hours to Seattle. I'd go that far. I have a newly modded monster mag, mostly made by JimmyM, that puts out lumens well into the 5 digits. The thing darn nearly burned my cabin down, but it's a blast once I get it outside.

Warmish... in western WA ...
Yea I'd like to get one done before its in the 50's ...instead of the wonderful 60's we had today:crackup:

Okay okay sorry, I couldn't resist. I like Sasha's climate a lot better, but other than climate I can't complain much about this area.

I think that it might be better to do a first get together in a large, easy to find place. Seattle area might not be a bad idea. Although I'm a perfectionist, I concede that it may be more practical to select a place thats easy access versus selecting a place for super darkness. We can do that super dark expedition another time IMO. Further ideas, comments, concerns, suggestions are welcome. I would drive to Alaska myself if thats where we decide to go.

Re: Interest in a Washington get together?

Well I'd say Magnuson Park would be good, it's easy to get to, has a shelter where we could barbecue, and it's open until 11:30...long after dark. It never gets super dark, but it's where I go to align my vehicle lights, and test flashlights.

Occasionally we'll happen across some high school kids smoking...but nothing like a sneak attack with thousands of lumens when they are at their most paranoid. (We've done it, they run like heck, probably thinking we're cops)

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
