Here is a white wall beam shot from my SunDrop XR-U with 119v emitter. Is this normal?

Looks about like mine did. The corners are rounded, but it's not a perfect circle with the 119v. Interestingly, a XPL-HI in there, had a rounder, nicer, and obviously brighter beam. At least mine did, with a Tana Light engine.

I'm not a white wall guy, but yes I believe I will also look into replacing this emitter. I don't think that's something I can do myself so I'm not really sure how to go about it.

for some reason i was thinking the opposite. that nichia's produces rounder spots because of the led shape while cree's were boxier. wimmer, is it just my monitor or is the bottom left corner brighter than the rest of the beam?

I think it is a feature, that has been discussed. Unlike the original 083B, the 119 has been reported to produce that rectangular beam. The beam from a 083B is perfectly round. On the other hand, looking at your beamshot I think that the colored rim around the spot is much worse with a 083B.

In any case, Sundrops go great with SF F04 beam shapers

I'm not seeing that, tab. It does have a darkish hot spot with a brighter outer ring though. I'm now assuming that this must be a Nichia emitter from many years ago.

Thanks. I'll do a search for beam shapers and see if that's an option I might want to explore.

Gunga, I will use this light before deciding, but I might like to see about swapping this emitter for an XP-L or XP-L HI, unless you believe that might produce odd colors. I'll also need to find someone who might want to do the swap for me. I have no clue whether Don bothers with such things.

Sundrops are very nice in use. But are terrible on a white wall.

Exactly. Pretty much you will always have a "squoval" beam on the wall with that light. Some ringiness is pretty common too. I have tried a few different LEs with different emitters. Similar results.

So even swapping this 119v for an XPL HI might still leave me with a brighter ring surrounding the center spot?

You won't get that with a SunDrop .... You may prefer a Mule instead

Really... ok. I definitely don't want a mule. I've never owned one but from what I understand a mule provides wide flood with very little reach... not my cup of tea. I may need to put this SunDrop up for sale. It's such a great looking light though.

Wimmer, don't forget, you can add different heads and use the same body. I have a Mule, a red LED Mule, a sundrop and a UV head that I can swap out. Its pretty cool that way...just a thought.
