Did anyone ever come up with a decent bulb to use in a 6C Mag using 9 123's? I searched and found the idea mentioned a couple of times but never a specific bulb.

JEEZ!!!

I did have 7x123 driving a 20W MR16 in a 4D... I think I heard that bulb screaming in agony! (I converted that M*g back to 5C and a 4.8V bulb to save some 123s for my other lights)

I GUESS you could TRY a 50W MR with 9.... might get magic smoke though....

Now a tiny bit seriously, you could try the bulb for a 24V tool light such as Dewalt. The two issues are: A big loopy filament makes a miserable beam... and heat might be a problem!!! You could even TRY an 18V bulb...

Yikes,

9x123? That would be the crappy 24V tool light bulbs as PBJoe says.
You could also try 24V halogen lamps for residential illumination. Those might work but I don't know about the bases. I believe Osram makes 24V residential bulbs.

thanks for the responses guys!!!

I just have this 6c mag that I carry in my car and it seems a shame not to 'see what she'll do' so to speak. yeah, I have no doubt I'll need an aluminum reflector and glass lens if i do this and run it more than a couple of seconds. Maybe if I can get my hands on one of those adjustable aluminum orange peel reflectors the beam wouldn't be too horrible.

What did you use for a spacer? Would it be possible to insert some washers and fabricate a series/parallel arrangement (3x3) for a high current 9v application?

Obviously new here. Just Curious.

I'll just split a piece of hose lengthwise. Right now I'm running it with 6AA lithium batteries that way. Since I keep it in my car I really want to run lithiums as I believe they are less likely to burst or leak from our high summer heat. Then When I realized that 9x123 would fit perfectly with no modification other than the split hose it just made too much sense not to try.

I've got this same problem. I too want to keep this in my car with lithium batteries. I've been swapping out NiCads about once a month for 15 years or longer. I also haven't found any suitable bulbs (24v?). In the future, we may be able to get suitable lithium rechargeable batteries and new bulb designs (LED?) that will get us some more options.

To stay with lithium batteries, there are still a few choices: One, use the 1.6v lithium AA photocells to overdrive a 5 cell Xenon bulb. That's what I'm doing now, and you can still use alkalines if the lithiums aren't avaliable.

Another approach is to use a voltage regulator to drive some other higher voltage bulb (or LED setup), buck or boost, depending on just what bulb or battery set up you wish to use. 3rd, use a series set (2 x 10?) of diodes for the 25-30v with 9 (or 10) CR123s. 4th, use 123s with a suitable spacer (a brass bolt, a stack of pennies?). I have 5 SF 123s im my 3C m@glite running a 10w, 12v halogen G4 bulb - this needs a diffuser like the orange peel reflector or the lens that Otokoyama is selling.

Can anyone add some more ideas? RussH

That's what I'm doing now except a 5 cell Krypton.

I hope to get in on one of the adjustable orange peel aluminum reflectors. Till then I may try a krylon spatter and very brief use with the stock reflector. Now to go out and try and find that 24 volt bulb.
