I see this on the new energizer and have seen it on old duracells and other brands of cells. What in the world does it mean?

Definitely accumulator -- that's what many countries call rechargeable batteries. :)

In Spain we tend to call them:

pila (cell): any kind of cell, mostly primary cells. Battery.
pila recargable (rechargeable cell): seconday cell.
bateria (battery): several cells in series, parallel or mix of both. It is used too if the cell/battery is part of the device.
acumulador (accumulator): Rarely used. Any kind of rechargeable source, single or multi cell.

So, the trademark "Energizer ACCU Rechargeable" would be redundant, wouldn't it? (i don't know if Energizer still uses it this way. This was on the box of one of their chargers from around ten years ago.)

Energizer isn't the only company to include ACCU into their product's name, Varta & PowerOne do as well to name but two, thus +1 on the Accumulator explanation!

Petzl also use 'Accu' when referring to rechargeable packs for the Duo/Ultra headlamps, so I'd guess it may be a fairly common mainland Europe term.

a multiple cells arrangement is logically called a battery! Originaly there was only non rechargeabe cells. When new cells that could store, that is accumulate electricity, came, they have been named accumulator, in short accu !
In the US people kept calling them batteries but rechargeable while the others became primary batteries.
