I used to think that the word was used only with knives, but now I saw it being used with flashlights, and I just have to know. What does Benchmade mean?

However, benchmade as a description is generally recognized to mean made by hand, on a workbench, vs. made in a mass produced, automated facility. The amount of hand manufacture has not been specified, so far as I know.

Interestingly, I have heard that several craft tradesman groups are trying to get it defined a bit more specifically, ie. 50% of the product is handmade, or 70% or whatever.

I was under the impression it means hand fitted or finished even if all parts were stamped or CNC'ed cast or how ever made. I am not sure about it.
