Hello,
What is the best torch currently available up to a budget of £120 which can be belt kit mounted for a UK Police Officer working a very rural beat ?
Thanks.

I would prefer the SureFires, but they most likely be over your budget. The ones under £120 might be the Eagletac G25C2 MKII, 856 ANSI lumens, 2cr123's or 1 18650. I also like the Klarus XT11. Same batteries, but a better UI, it's also cheaper. I bought mines on Amazon, but not sure about the shipping prices. Good luck finding a light! 🙂

Hey Floppy - welcome!

There are a lot of variables to consider for your torch.

Are you on foot patrol? Do you have a vehicle? Are you paying for batteries out of pocket, or are you issued any? Do you have a preference for rechargeable or not? Do you typically work day shift, or evening shift?

What kind of modes, if any, do you want? What kind of user interface? Do you want something at a local brick-n-mortar store, or are you ordering online?

I don't know about price but, The Klarus XT11 is the Preferred Torch for police.

TMedina,
I use a 4 x 4, single crewed, mixture of mainly late and night shifts.
A colleague has recently purchases a Thrunite Scorpion V2 which looks pretty good.
I'll be paying for the batteries, I'm not bothered about rechargeable, I typically use a torch for a few minutes only each time, but require it to be bright as I am generally away from street lights most of the shift. Large numbers of modes are not required, just easy access to full power.
Thanks.

There was a Surefire 6P with Malkoff M60 on sale on BritishBlades Forums for £70. If it is still available and you bought it the remaining money would buy a holster and quite a few CR123 batteries from somewhere like 7dayshop.com. Small size, and very reliable torch with bomb proof drop-in. Both Surefire and Malkoff are known for their high quality and reliability. Worth a look to see if it is still there especially as it is in the UK?

The scorpion is a good light, throws a small beam. Good for long distance work.. You may want something with a little more flood.

Klarus xt11. No memory mode. Always turns on to highest output each time.

Hey, i am ex forces and i am now in security. For a flashlight for patrols i have the fenix ld41, it was approx £60 and uses 4xaa's. Recharcheables can be used. It has a belt holster, is very sturdy and has several modes, low med high turbo. So u can use it in the back of a vehicle looking for something without blinding yourself or the higher modes for really good illumination.

As a fellow officer (at the moment) I have been using the eagltac p20c2 with an r5 xpg drop in, and it slips nicely in the shoulder seem of my vest, it is awesome and everyone else who are not torch geeks always covets it but won't pay the price.........you could get it, and it already has a holster,a charger, and a decent 17670 battery for about 85 pound.it now has the xpg2 chip so it is brighter and throws better, the modules are replaceable so it is cheap to upgrade as the chips improve.......i have just sold my set up, well i think i have so you just missed out on a Bargin!

He said he want's a police light, not a toy. Really people. It's so annoying to see people recommending some Chinese flavor of the month light to someone looking for a serious light. It's also dangerous as that individual might not know enough about lights to understand that the Xt**, Tc**, whatever flavor of the month thats being discussed is a toy. Not a serious tool.

For a general duty light the Streamlight Scorpion or Strion is as good as it gets at the lower price ranges, as would be the Surefire Lawman. Some of the smaller Surefires / Malkoff combos are good for tactical entry uses and such. Especially the Z models. A Chinese light would be OK as a backup utility light.

I recommend the Stinger LED HP DS model. It has the dual switches (tactical and side-mounted switch). When I demonstrated mine to some officers during a ride-along, they went out and bought this model right away!

If you decide to pull the trigger, be sure to get the updated 350 lumen model (BrightGuy has them in stock). The new model has improved spill-beam performance in addition to a very throwy hotspot.

If you think the light is too big, check out the Strion LED HP. The new one is 250 lumens.

In my opinion you can't beat the simple UI of the Stinger/Strion line. It always defaults to high when activated. Then, if you wish to use a lower setting, just press and hold the switch for it to cycle to medium and low. Double click gets you disorienting strobe. It is very hard to accidentally enter the alternate modes. Simple. Reliable. Crazy bright.

I have been a cop for ten years plus and I can say that I the best lights I have used for duty are maglite, Eagletac, sunwayman. Had lots of surefires...good lights but over priced and no better than many others in my opinion.....streamlight is ok

I totally disagree. I have banged the crap outta my gear and have had great success with the Sunwayman, tc 20, klarus xt11 (not my first choice) and eagletac G2.

Any light designed or capable for weapon mounting should be fine for a duty light. Many of the Chineese companies have shown their lights to trustworthy. Stick with one of the name brands and you will b fine. The main thing is to find the user interface that work for you. The Eagletac G25c is another light you may want to consider.

I also disagree, same experience with my lights here.............................and also strobe never seen it used in 11 years of frontline service, might be popular the US, but over here its never used, ever.

Tells us Brasso how you really feel about manufacturers other than Surefire and Streamlight.

I'm not sure which "flavor of the month" company/lights you might be referring to but all of the ones I have seen in this thread so far are good quality lights....some of them are good enough for me to use myself and if you knew me...you would know what that means. Most of them have also been around for a while, not some new upstart that just entered the market.

I have been out of LE for a while now and still occasionally do private security...which is sometimes more demanding on the equipment...1) Because you don't have backup immediately available 2) Because most companies don't provide the proper equipment, ever...so you use what you can afford, and afford to lose. 3) Because sometimes the people you work with don't bother to get their own so you end up loaning out in a situation where you want them to have one.

Brasso I think you missed the part where the OP is not an American LEO, while I'm sure they can get Surefires over there...it will be at a premium, likely quite a bit more due to the import taxes. It's likely that Floppy Legs isn't going to need a combat light for daily duty, if I recall correctly you still do not arm every Officer there...unless things have changed?

If I were to go back to LE work I would confidently carry Sunwayman, Olight, Jetbeam (older ones), Fenix, Klarus or even Niteye (these look like some of the old Jetbeams) as easily as my Surefires and not feel ill-equipped to handle any given situation I might be placed in. I could definitely see using my Jetbeam III M or Olight M21for traffic control and keeping my Surefire C2 for clearing the buildings/rooms.

In truth I do not believe there is any one BEST light for Police work any more than there is one BEST sidearm or one BEST vehicle for Police work....are some better than others? Most certainly, but I think it's up to the individual officer's (or dept's) needs and preferences to decide what works best for them. Just because the tool is durable doesn't mean it's the best for the job.

I don't know about price but, The Klarus XT11 is the Preferred Torch for police.

Yeah . . . Not even remotely true. Police officers in general still prefer their Maglites and Streamlight flashlights. These brands have been around decades longer than Klarus, and are well-established in the LEO community.
