HIDs seem really expensive. Are there any that aren't very expensive? What is the cheapest HID light out there? Thanks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are you looking for the cheapest stock HID light? IIRC UFOkillerz sold some TK HID Mags for somewhere in the low 200s a while back.

Are you looking for a 10W like the Mag or 35W based on automotive parts? Is it to be hand held or mounted on a bike ?

Ebay for the automotive HID ($60-80) and then find a large light (Thor or something of that ilk) ($50-70). Although, be be very careful when and if you do it yourself, since I fried the ballast-igniter doing it myself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif, and now the $200 TK HID mods suddenly seems more reasonable,... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif

If you want the real punch (35W), go for an X990 ... should be around $450 ... a real cheapo in this class.

Uk light Cannon 10 watt or 35 watt X990 for hand held.
The parts alone for do-it yourself will cost mone than the cannon. X990's competitors cost $1800 to $2800. Milennium has a bike mount 10 watt HID with remote gel cell for around $300 if wanted on bike. I just mounted mt X990 on my bike in its somewhat overweight and over kill. Fantastic brightness on flood setting but is killing everyone I ride with their night vision (turns Darkness into Daylight) and they only have cygolights or cat eyes on their bikes, Get a Cygolight dual beam 16 watt on mountain bike at your bikeshop for $85. Love mine. 2-4hour runtime on gel cel (1 bulb or 2)
Cygolight has Hard hat mount too and battery on belt. Uses 6 volt projection bulbs with built in reflectors. Has a wide and narrow beam in one unit.

I found a place that sells dual 10w Solarc sets, meant for ATV helmet-mounting. They apparently run off 12vdc. Much cheaper than naything else I've seen.

NikolaTesla, I've got that same Cygo. Good light, works well. Refitted with a larger battery for better cold-weather and 'oops, forgot to charge it' runtime.

UK LC100 Light Canon can be had for $150 from Leisurepro.

That's the best price I've found. Great service from Leisurepro as well (I've ordered lots of stuff from them and they have always taken care of me).

If you are looking for an HID for diving use, this light is awesome. If you are looking for an HID as a "play" light, there may be better choices. I love mine, but use it mostly for diving. The long start up time makes it impractical for my "normal/everyday" intermittant type flashlight use.

The Solarc 10W lamp has a reputation for being fragile, but mine has survived some pretty hard knocks. Several times I have had the light wink out after a bump (a few times not even a very hard bump), but after the "wait/off" period it fires right back up. I suspect this happens because the 8xC batteries are spring tensioned and probably break contact if bumped in the right direction.

Other than that I have had no problems with the LC100. There are a few threads here about people having trouble with the LC100, but I have not experienced any of those issues. My LC100 has been a great light that has stood up to the rigors of diving use very well.

What would be other options for an HID "play" light? I was /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif this close to clicking on the order button when I saw your post- thought maybe I'd better see what others might be better for my purposes- (strictly play.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

I seem to recall selling my own lightly used Light Cannon for ~$100. And street prices are only a little above that I am pretty sure.

Looks like they're about $160 nowadays, from my limited poking about- maybe prices have gone up on them recently? I figured IllumiGeek was referring to a different brand/model of light-

Hmmm... they did go up. Got my Light Canon for $149.95 new from the link I posted. It was that price for quite a long time. Must've gone up recently, because a friend of mine got one two weeks ago at 149 as well.

Oh well...

The dual mount helmet thing looks very cool. Great price too.
Do you know for sure that these are Welch Allen Ballast's \ bulbs?
Do you have one of the dual helmet lights? Could you post a close up of the Lens \ Bulb assy??
I can't find the manufacturer of this light or anywhere else on the web.

Thanks..

Thanks Zelandeth ... But that is what I would use to compare from.
I have an LC100, but wanted to see if the dual helmet lights were in fact Welch Allen lights... guess I should have clarified that better.
There... edited my original post to be more specific.

Perhaps this will help: Performance Bike, lighting page-Topeak & L&M ARC HID's both use WA Solarc at dif. wattages I've read another reviewer's comments on the contention that most bike lights, including the reviewed L&M use the WA Solarc system, which allows for integrated bulb(capsule) & ballast to be placed into the head, unlike the higher wattage Cateye which has a larger, bulky separate ballast . Topeak seems to have identical head and Li-Ion battery pack to that ATV helmet kit, so we can assume made by same company.

Cateye Stadium 3 is known to be 21w, but I don't know who the manufacturer is.

BikeNasbar.com 'Nightpro Extreme' Solarc, you can click on this one for larger pic of yet another chromeplated head.

I just recieved one of the TrailTech headlights today. I am just waiting for the sun to go down to take it on it's maiden voyage.

It does appear that they are using WA bulbs and ballasts. The bulb is labled M10P002 walamp.com The Ballast is B10N002 12.8-13.2V 10W. I can take some shots if people are interested.
