What is the origin of your screen-name?

Candle Power Flashlight Forum

Help Support CPF:

I started using this one in a computer messageboard, and it just stuck because it's easier to remember one name in all the messageboards I use then choose different ones. Plus, I do invest in the stocks and commodities, although I wouldn't call myself a "wizard" although I'm not terrible either.

If silver goes to $50 plus like I and Ted Butler envision, then I'll be a wizard... thanks to Ted Butler. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mine is totally Spoof.

Playboy. Well duh! (Though I gotta say it's a mostly disappointing magazine these days!)

JoeShmoe. A very ordinary average guy!

Can't quite make myself give my real name online....

AlphaTea-

LOL, better than the other derisive comments I figured I'd get.....

Name I use when playing Sierra Tribes.

Just like the sound of it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

several years ago, i used to play an online game called (of all things) "arc". my friend and i started a clan called snot "smiting nipples of terror" (the spaceships in the game were called nipples, for obvious reasons), and we decided that our names should rhyme with snot. he took "bot" before i got a chance to, so i ended up with "rot"
after that, i joined a tolkien forum (to which i no longer post...), and rot was already taken.
being somewhat unorigional (never was good with name things...), i combined rot and mithrandir(gandalf), and got rothrandir.
after that i created a hotmail address, and used rothrandir, so now i'm stuck with it...

in hindsight, it's a rather stupid name, but i'm stuck with it now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

At one time long ago, I was puppet-master to a puppet named EMPATH. A more obnoxious, and disagreeable puppet would be hard to find. His name was spelled with all caps, to a great extent because it was more in your face and irritating that way. Pity the man that showed poor judgment by ignoring the proper protocol of all caps. But, as happens between master and puppet, the lines between the two became entangled, and it slowly became more difficult to tell which was master and which was puppet. The puppet used a nick given to his master by acquaintances and friends. But he abused the name no end, turning it into a means of verbal jousts and battles of wit.

One day EMPATH, the puppet, presented to the puppet master a most interesting concept which he had picked up from one of his ventures. It was a set of "dos and don'ts" that were not rules. Or, it could be called rules without the "dos and don'ts". Basically a philosophy of three efforts.

(1) Try not to identify
(2) Try not to be negative
(3) Inner consideration never; external consideration always. (Lotsa' try involved with that)

This of course created a dilemma, since EMPATH was but a puppet that was terribly confused as to whether he was puppet or master, and a puppet master terribly entangled with the activity of his puppet. The source of the new philosophy held promise of being a "pearl of great value". A "pearl of great value" doesn't come without sacrifice. At times it's necessary to sell all you own in order to acquire it. To complicate matters, EMPATH the puppet had picked up a follower that recognized that a puppet meant more was involved that just the action of the puppet. An obligation had developed, wanted or not, and the follower was not going to turn loose nor shift their attention to any other matter. So, with follower close behind, Empath, the puppet master, sold all he had, figuratively wrapping the strings around EMPATH the puppet and placing him securely in his box. EMPATH had gotten his wishes and had become one with Empath the puppet master. Together they headed out to sit at the feet of some wise ones that had been granted a certain period of time for a purposeful school. The source of the "pearl" proved to be a very worthwhile resource tool.

There are obligations and responsibilities of EMPATH and Empath, some negative and some positive. To use another name would not be shouldering those responsibilities and obligations. Continuing it's use permits continuity.

Originally, nobody on the internet with a name spelled just like mine - "Darell" ever logged on, apparently. Yes, this was WAY before WWW was even a glint in eye of the internet. So for years and years, I could just be Darell. But no. Not today. Now there are apparently THOUSANDS of Darells just sitting around and creating usernames so that I can't have it. I tacked on my initials, and BAM, there you go.

Somehow, Empath's situation sounds a little "deeper" than mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

tiktok= tick-tock-tick-tock......

it's the sound a watch or clock makes.

22=because there seems to be another tiktok out there somewhere.

Short form of my real name. Besides some teachers, hardly anybody ever used my real name, not even my parents.

BS.....being from Ottumwa Iowa, I would have thought your name would be "Radar"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

Mine is just my name backwards...nothing special. I just got tired of all the screen names I wanted already being taken.

I used to like Green Lantern in the Justice League comix. Since lanterns and incandescents are becoming obsolete (kinda), I went with greenLED. Green's my favorite color, BTW.

I was just about to start a thread on this topic, and then discovered that there was already a similar one in existence....so here's a free historical bump! This will be a fun thread to resurrect.

Interstingly enough, I got my name by accident.

I'd started reading CPF in late 2005, and decided to join in December '05. I signed up using an entirely different name - I can't remember what - and then sat back to wait for the admins to approve it.

A week passed with no response, so I submitted a second name. When I didn't hear back again after another few days, I tried signing up under a third name. By the fourth attempt, I figured "well, this attempt is going to be quickly surpassed by another one - it'll just be a flash in the pan" (a phrase that usually describes something that shows early promise but quickly fades away, leaving disappointment.) FlashInThePan was attempt #4, and of course, as fate would have it that's the name the admins eventually approved. So I've been a FlashInThePan ever since!

Very interesting thread to resurrect.

I was in a hurry to put up my first post and all the names I thought of at the time where taken, plus I didn't want something with numbers in it. I finally thought about the reasons why someone would need a bright flashlight, and voila... I have perfect low light vision BTW, so it has nothing to do with me. I'm thinking of changing it, but can't think of anything original enough to my liking.

It's the way I felt the first moment I found the forum. I didn't know anything besides Maglite and River Rock. Sure, there was Surefire, but I was convinced there was an equal or better product which I could actually hope to afford. I knew there had to be something better. I would check the flashlight section on EVERY trip to Wally World or Target; nothing. I scoured the internet, amazing I did not initially find this forum.

But then one day I did stumble here, and where once I was lost....., you know the rest.
