I dont dive that much at night and havent invested in a light yet, normally I just rent a dive light at the shop I am diving with. Every time it has always been a incandescent light along with a back up light/strobe. We also dive with glowsticks all the dive companies I have been with make you have 2 green sticks attached to your back (which are easily visible from the surface even when 60-90 feet down), I have been with one company that made us keep a redish (more like orange color) on the front of us in addition to the greens on your back.
Anyways back on topic, I have seen some HID dive lights but they seem bulky and always have a cord that attach to a battery strapped to the BCD. One thing about a dive light is it has to last an hour + being on constantly, we are always taught never ever turn your dive light off since it might not go back on and dont count on your back up light working either since it could be cold and not fire up. (we always cover our lights with our hands if we need darkness).
But back to HID's that I have seen, they put out a heck of a lot of light and look fantastic underwater but in my opinion underwater you dont want that much light unless you are searching for something otherwise you disturb the wildlife which to view most of the time you slowly move your light and just have the corner of the beam illuminate it so you can see it otherwise the fish/creature will be disturbed.
