how often do you guys use HID light?

What kind of situation do you use the light?

Usually during hiking or walking, other times while in the vehicle pointing out on of the side windows, usually looking for wildlife. A few times per year I use them to intentionally search for something, like finding my uncle's horses or even downed game animals during hunting trips.

The rest of the time I just play with them for the enjoyment of it.

Maybe once a month for wide area searches and illuminating suspects at long distance.

I use my high power HID lights mainly for recreational use such as taking on walks and cloud bouncing. I do the same thing as StarHalo on July 4th, as their beams are visible from quite a distance.

My practical use for them is lighting up my yard if I hear something in the middle of the night, as their peripheral lighting ability is second to none, which results do to their high lumen output.

About the same....I have a maxabeam, which has a strobe function. That has come in handy dispersing crowds of kids hanging out after Friday night football games.....

My agency bought a few Maxas that sit unused in the armory. I opened two from their original packaging, but nobody but me knows we have them (or cares, most likely).

They are neat, but I actually prefer my Wolf Eyes Boxer 24 Watt HID for mobility and my Costco HID for portable massive light output. Our SWAT team has at least one Surefire Beast.

This time of the year our wildlife starts becoming a more active after dark, cooling to 85 degrees by 8:00pm. I've been riding my mountain bike along a fence line that separates trust land from the neighborhood and parks. Many different species cross this boundary at nightfall looking for food and water and the park acts as an ingress funnel since the critters feel safe transitioning into its natural surrounding terrain and washes. In any case, I've been riding up and down this half mile hot spot with the Polarion and Microfire which fit nicely in a small backpack with some foam. Last night I saw a good sized Bobcat and shortly after that I saw a group of about 7 or 8 Javelina with two very small young. It was my guess that the Bobcat was looking for an easy grab but I probably messed up his plans unknowingly when I slowly closed in with the light. I got to within about 25 yards of the Bobcat!

The bike has been a great way to get close since it's so quiet on the pavement. The animals don't seem to get to freaked out be the light as I think they've become conditioned by the occasional vehicle traffic. I'm trying to work out some kind of rig that will allow me to aim the camera and light co-axial with each other, which is also hand hold-able because I'd like to take some pictures. I'll see what I can do...
