What songs have had a profound impact on your life?

The song "Domino" by Genesis - specifically the Live version, has brought me through many tough times. From my early 20's when I was trying to figure out what to do with my life, through college, through the challenges of my job and life's troubles along the way. I've always had it close at hand, from my mix-tapes to CD's to MP3 players to smartphones.

It's in two parts "The Glow of the Night", and "The Last Domino". The first part is slow, but when the second half kicks on, you become an unstoppable juggernaut of positivity, aligned with your ability to solve problems and weather whatever life may throw at you.

I guess that would have to be One by Metallica. I have always loved that song but I got to work one of their shows. I was standing on the side of the stage right next to the pyro when the into started and the pyro started going off. I was also right next to the band before they went on. Even though I was security I knew nothing would happen because the crowd was so focused on the music. I was able to completely relax and just enjoy this one song in its entirety. It was a total zen moment in an occupation that is usually highly stressful. I will probably never get an experience like that again.

Yeah, Lennon even admitted it was an endorsement of Communism years later in an interview. Unlike myself and my parents, Lennon had no clue what real Communism was like. If he did, he'd have ripped up his notes, tossed them into the waste-paper basket, and then tossed a lit match in as well.

I remember this red head pvt, a homie from CA, he just arrived in-county with his duffle over shoulder carrying a record player box by handle.

This Carol King song he played every night over and over until one evening a bother walked up and broke the 45 vinyl, stomped it into pieces.

The red headed kid from SoCal, he was KIA a few days later engaged in an firefight.

Our Lt ordered that same bro soldier to help pack his personal belongings, very carefully, by many watchful eyes..

March 1971 somewhere in South Vietnam

I was almost 14 at the time .... Thank you for your sacrifices, knucklegary.

Won't lie.... Now I'm wondering if perhaps the Red Head Private had a girl back home who was waiting for him. Yeah, I'm just going to reel in my Writer's imagination before it gets too far afield this time.

I know it couldn't have been easy for you to share that true tale. Thank you for having done so. And, as Chauncey mentioned, there are folks out there (including on CPF) who are grateful for the sacrifices you and others made during that time. Please don't ever forget that.

memories... I've never been a fan of Carol King

That was a great song, but I suppose when you've been sweating day after day in a mosquito ridden jungle, getting shot at from all directions (including friendly's) that song would get old quickly.
Imagine sweating day after day in a Soviet Union gulag and having to listen to Lennon's song reminding you how good you have it.
