Where to get IR lasers?

just a question why would u like it to be IR ??

if u want IR u will not be able to see a beam

Seeing as it is for a weapon mounting application I can only assume he wants to use it along with an image intensifying device.

Ahhh, Jellydonut. I know you from the LaserPointerForums. Tough crowd...

If you want IR laser, just take a 50mW green pen laser with fresh bateries, and tape the button down so it stays on, and wait for it to burn out. That will fry the YAG crsytal, and will only emmit IR laser.

Are you sure this trick works

What? First, the diode will die before the crystal. Second, IR diodes are multimode and cannot be focused with green laser optics. Third, almost no IR will pass through a green laser, even less if the crystal burned out....
@god, it will NOT work.

If you want to get a WORKING IR laser, Solscud I will need pics of the inside of your weapon mounted laser. It could be as simple as a diode swap.

First I think you should calm down. Second, I've done this accidentally plenty of times. It may not be a IR laser, but it does emit IR light.
The OP doesn't want to buy an IR laser, so I suggested my ghetto method into making one out of a green DPSS.
And I know it still emits IR light after burning out because I saw the IR with an IR sensitive camera.

OP said he wanted to swap out the module in his existing weapon sight, not have a barely working humongous green module. Is OP still around? I could easily help him swap the diode.

Its just a suggestion. And it DOES work.
It obviously would not be the quality of a store bought IR weapon sight, but it will still emit tons of IR (dangerous amounts).
If you have cheapo ~5mW DPSS green I say why not try it.

Interesting thread !

I never realized God was a member of CandlePowerForums ! ! !

:wow:

Suppose i'd better say :welcome:

just to be on the Safe side.

Guess it's not totally unexpected, however . . . .

wyager... edit your post #6 IMMEDIATELY to remove the abusive references. Any further posts or language of that nature will earn you an immediate ban from this board.

If someone could specify a green laser to purchase that would only require a diode swap, and a source for diodes, I would really appreciate it.

What? Do you want to make it an IR laser? Swapping the diode on a green laser will only make it not work anymore.... What exactly do you want to do?

Yes, Smurftacular, I think your ghetto suggestion may emit *some* IR, however it is a complete waste of efficiency, and not really a helpful suggestion. Now let's move on.

You can purchase an IR laser module from numerous laser vendors. I think www.modwerks.com or possibly www.lasersurplusparts.com. You may also be able to find one on eBay. You will, however, need some form of nightvision apparatus in order for the ir to become a visible beam.

Thanks slick. Chances are, he doesn't even need an IR module, he can just pop out the red diode and put in a cheap single mode IR diode found in any CD burner. But if he would post pics, I could tell for sure...

Sorry guys. I totally forgot about this thread. The I will have to take pics when I get home after this weekend. The laser sight in question is a NCstar KO of lasermax's laser sight.

I do have NVGs, albeit toy NVGs but they work. I only want to make my laser IR for fun. not interested in real accuracy. I have IR Surefires for fun. having a laser would be added fun.
