Ok, I have a 12aa d mag using a Osram 64633 bulb. The amount of light this thing puts out is crazy! I wanted a fire starter and this is it! I have a lot of people to thank here for making this possible, but a special thanks to Fivemega who answered a lot of newbie questions. Also I would like to report that I'm no longer a :poof: virgin. That's what happens when you put in a 64610 and forget to remove the extra cell. The only problem is, it seems as if I have no throw. My Mag85 with 3 18650's throws further. The light has the Elite 1700 cells with what appears to be a LOP reflector. The reflector is camless and I have tried turning the head to improve throw, but no luck. However, the reflector does look different then the other ones I have. Take a look at the pic. Would this make a difference in the throw? Thanks again....Sid

No, I think that reflector was designed for extra throw. It's a combination of the wide horizontal filament in your bulb, and the orange peel finish on your reflector. A smooth reflector would help a bit, but a larger mag head and reflector would help more.

Like Matt stated, the filament size has a lot of bearing on throw with relation to the size of the reflector. If you look at the filament of the 1185 you'll notice that it's 1/4 the size if not smaller. The smaller point source of light from 1185 or 1111 bulbs do indeed throw further when using the same reflector. You could install a smooth reflector but you probably wouldn't be pleased with the beam artifacts. Going to a lager head, with smooth reflector would minimize this effect some but still wouldn't provide the relatively smooth output that you have now.

I have an extra FiveMega, FM3-V2 head, smooth reflector, non-cammed, if you're looking for something like that.

That looks like a Modamag reflector, which is, overall a nice reflector. But asking for throw from a 2" mag head and a wide filament is just too much. I run an FM MOP reflector on my Torch and it is a flood light with a small hot spot.

Smaller filament, bigger reflector- I put my Colossus 4" head on a 1331 1D and while it looked ridiculous the beam was amazing.

Like others have said the filament size of the 64633 isn't the best for throw. If you want a little better throw cut back to 11 cells and use the 100W 64138 bulb.

Notice how compact the 64138 is vs the 64633.

+1

There is a man with a nice camera and macro lens. Which is it?

That is one fantastic picture!

What everyone has said here makes perfect sense.I do have a 62138 coming so I'll try to post some beamshots. Do the upgrades ever end!? My wallet's starting to rebel...lol.

That's a link to the Canon PowerShot A590IS. The A650 runs more like $400.00. Steve's digicams gave it great reviews and the pic speaks for itself.

Back to the light. The reactions I get when this thing is fired up is well worth the price of the light. Some people even think it's some kind of trick! When the paper ignites it's priceless, they just can't believe a flashlight can do that. Very cool indeed...Sid

That reflector is a Modamag M2 MOP, not a LOP. The M2 has a steeper porabala than other after-market reflectors and this can make for a tighter beam. A M2 LOP or SMO would give that wide filament more throw.
