I have Hitachi Cordless Drill kit with a 14.4V Inc flashlight model UB 18D
Te battery is 14.4v 1.2 mAh NiCd

It WAS the brightest I had until I've got L3D & TK20. I figure UB 18D puts out ~40 Lum on fresh battery.

What do I need to upgrade it to bring it up to standards?
My goal is to make a light with a decent flood and some throw. Runtime of 2hrs+ would be nice. The more the merrier.

I am thinking a single Cree Q5 such as DX SKU 2394

But I am lost looking at drivers.

Dimmable (a plus), however, it talks about regulating current, but nothing about output voltage. Will it for for only 1 3.7V LED?

DealExtreme SKU 13557

seems to fit the voltage in/out, but at only 350ma output.

What would be a good match for my 14.4v setup and single LED?
Thanks!

I think not...I mean even the lowest AA NiCd is about 700 mAh. :grin2:

Now your 14.4 V bulb is probably 0.75 A, giving it a 10 W output and about 300 lumens. I feel you will struggle if you seek a single LED emitter with better than 300 lumens output. Wouldn't you do better just to keep it as it is? If you really wanted it brighter, you could try overdriving a 12 V bulb instead of the 14.4 V bulb, perhaps? Or even try a bi-pin adapter and go with a bright xenon/halogen bulb?

Ok, I knew it did not look right to me :)
Mr Happy is right, it is 1.2 Ah.

Current bulb - XPR18V 0.6A driven at 14.4v, it definately is less bright than my LED lights.
I did a quick search, apparently DeWalt makes the best 12v PR bulbs?
How long will a 12v bulb last at 14.4V?
How will 12v bulb compare in terms of runtime and output to a Q5?
Is there a setup that can cheaply (<$50) beat 12v bulb in terms of output and battery life?
