Hello All!

I am an emergency services worker in Australia and I am looking for a powerful flashlight to use for a variety of applications. I would like to use the flashlight for both outdoor use (on rooftops, nighttime searches in parkland etc.) as well as in confined spaces. I guess it needs to be robust and able to survive water and knocks. I was also looking for something mid-sized, 7 - 10 inches, which is why i liked the L7 so much, as I have to use both hands often it needs to be able to be stuck in a large pocket of go on the belt without hindering me too much.

I dont mind rechargable or carrying extra batteries around with me. Cost isn't too much of an option as I want something reliable, powerful and reasonably compact.

There are so many flashlights out there, I am really stuck.

Some that looked good to me were:

Surefire L7
Fenix T10
Surefire A2 Aviator

Ill take any suggestions as i'm open to anything at this point.

We have a recommendation checklist that helps a lot when people come here requesting flashlight recommendations. The more info you provide, the better suggestions we can give :)

If you can fill this out, it will help us help you:

****************************

Recommend a Flashlight Checklist:
(Don't worry about all the questions, just the ones you feel strongly about!)

Short Essay Question: What do you intend to use this light for?

0) What Region/Country/State will the light be purchased in?

____I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.
____I am in North America. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in South America. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in Europe. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in the Middle East. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in Africa. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in Asia, Japan or Micronesia. More precisely I am in _______________.
____I am in Australia. More precisely I am in _______________.

1) Price Range: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I only want to pay $1-10.
____I can spend $15-30.
____I could spend $40-60.
____I am willing to spend $80-$120.
____I have no limit!

2) Format:

____I want a flashlight.
____I want a headlamp.
____I want a lantern.
____I want a portable spotlight.

3) Length:

____I don't care.
____1-2 inches. (Keychain sized)
____2-4 inches. (Pocket carry)
____4-9 inches. (Holster carry)

4) Width:

____I don't care.
____I prefer a long narrow light.
____I prefer a short wide light.

5) What batteries do you want to use? Alkaline batteries are easier to find and less expensive but don't pack as much stored energy and are don't work well in cold temperatures. Lithium batteries have long shelf life (10+ years, great for stored emergency lights) and are not as affected by cold but must be kept dry and are more expensive. Rechargeable start expensive, but if used frequently pay off quickly.

____I want common Alkaline batteries. (AA, AAA, C, D)
____I want lithium batteries. (coin cells, CR123, AAA, AA...)
____I want a rechargeable system. (an investment, but best for everyday use)

6) How much light do you want? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

____I want to read a map, or find a light switch, in a dark room. (5-10 lumens)
____I want to walk around a generally paved area. (15-20 lumens)
____I want to walk unpaved trails. (40 lumens)
____I want to do Caving or Search & Rescue operations. (60+ lumens)
____I want to light an entire campground or dazzle an intruder. (100+ lumens)

7) Throw vs Flood: Which do you prefer, lights that flood an area with a wide beam, or lights that "throw" with a tightly focused beam? Place an "X" on the line below.

Throw (distance)----------------------|----------------------Flood/close-up

8) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims (like some LED lights). but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries.

____20 min. (I want the brightest light for brief periods)
____60-240 min. (1-2 hours)
____240-360 min. (4-6 hours)
____360+ min. (More than 6 hours)

9) Durability: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light.)
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood.)
____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box.)
____Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Self-defense, Survival.)

8) Switch Type:

____I don't care.
____I want a sliding switch. (Stays on until slid back.)
____I want a "clickie" switch. (Stays on until pressed again.)
____I want a momentary switch. (Only stays on while held down.)

9) Switch Location:

____I don't care.
____I want a push or sliding switch on the body near the head.
____I want a push switch on the back end of the body.
____I want a rotating head switch.
____I want a rotating end-cap switch.
____I want a remote control.

10) Operational Modes: Check all that apply.

____A simple on-off is fine for me.
____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
____I want multiple light levels. (some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a strobe mode. (blinks to show location.)
____I want a tactical strobe. (Flashes rapidly to disorient an opponent.)

11) Is it important whether the body is metal or plastic/composite?

____I don't care.
____I want a metal-bodied light.
____I want a plastic/composite light.

12) Special Needs: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Circle any below or write in your own comment(s).

____Red (night vision preserving) filter
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________)
____Waterproof – how deep: _____________
____Non-reflective/dark finish (stealthy/hard to find)
____Polished silver or brightly colored finish (for easy locating)
____Corrosion resistant or hard-anodized finish
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Built-in second (or spare) lamp or filament
____Belt/Jacket clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Kobuton/self defense features
____Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

Now that we got that out of the way, the SF A2 is one excellent illumination tool! Its low LEDs would be good for up close work and filling out paperwork, etc. It's incandescent high provides you with a bright, beautiful, white, regulated(!!!) beam. Unlike most flashlights (especially incandescent), its output will not fade over the useful life the batteries due to its regulator (it is one of the only [if possibly the only] regulated incan on the market).

There is an excellent review of the A2 by CPF member "js" that you can read here (definitely worth the read):

Good Luck in yer' quest for the perfect flashlight.

Just wondering why this thread is

posted in the Incandescent forum?

I am in Australia. More precisely I am in Victorian happy to purchase online

I have no limit!

I want a flashlight. 4-9 inches. (Holster carry), width I don't care.

I want lithium batteries or a rechargeable system.

I want to light an entire campground or dazzle an intruder. (100+ lumens)

Throw (distance)---------------X------|----------------------Flood/close-up

Runtime 60-240 min. (1-2 hours)

Durability Critical

Switch type: I don't care.

Switch Location: I don't care.

Operational Modes: Check all that apply.
A simple on-off is fine for me.
I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
I want a strobe mode. (blinks to show location.)

I want a metal-bodied light

Waterproof must, Holster would be nice

There are so many good ones to choose from....

I'll just offer up one possible and that would be the JetBeam M1X. It uses a very bright quad-die LED emitter and is close to the size you're looking for. It uses a variety of battery combination's including two 18650 li-ion rechargeable batteries and has a good reputation around here even though that particular model is somewhat new.

There are others to consider but this might be one candidate to start investigating.

The A2 and the M1X both look great. I assume as more suggestions come in this is going to become a hard choice.

Maybe i will have to get 2....

For your uses I believe a 3 light system would work better.

A Large light - Something along the lines of the Surefire M3T etc
This would be kept in the rig & give you a longer throwing light.

A Medium Light - Something along the lines of the Surefire A2, Fenix TK10, etc
This would give you a mid range thrower/area light.

A Small Light - Something along the lines of a Surefire L1, Novatac 120P etc
This would give you a close range light for paperwork, & close confines.

Lighthound is a good place to shop

Oh and :welcome:

Since you said that you have no price limit...I present the perfect combo for you...
SureFire A2 Aviator
Polarion Helios PH40 Who wouldn't want 4,000+ lumens for over 60 minutes rechargeable!

You would have LED, incandescent, and HID all wrapped into two excellent lights

Haha, under $2000 wasn't an option on the list. But my limit is definitely higher than $120.

The A2 is looking pretty good at the moment. But with which color LEDs?

And thanks for all the welcome messages.

You might want to consider the Eagletac T100C2. It is significantly cheaper than other lights, but it has very good features.
It has full regulation on both 18650's and CR123s, and around 3 hours of output on high. The low mode apparently runs for 18 hours, and is something around 50-60 lumens. It has a forward clicky switch, so you have momentary on capability for signaling. Modes are changed by loosening the head (which puts the light into low mode). It should be fairly water resistant (advertised as IPX-8, but that doesn't mean that much), and very durable. It uses a CREE XP-E LED, so it has a lot of throw because the die is smaller.

The Eagletac looks good too. So where is the best place online to buy an A2 or T100C2 online? With holster and batteries

I would get 2, A Zebralight H501, and a Fenix TK20.

I have both, I have written what i think about them here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=232504

I would go the TK20 over the TK10 simply because, to my eyes at least (I have both..) the TK10 is not a whole lot brighter, the TK20 has better color rendition and the big big reason... 2xAA is a lot easier than 2x CR123.

Zebralight also uses AA, so only 1 type of battery to carry.

I have tested the TK20 (dropped it in the bath) and its definitely waterproof. I dont trust the H501 so much though :S

I'm also in Vic, if your anywhere near Ballarat PM me and I may be able to give you a quick demo of all my torches :p (yes yes, i am a show of.. :p )

I only have 14, not sure if that makes me a flashoholic or not..

Regards,
Kipper

For the T100C2 light and holster look here. https://www.pts-flashlights.com/

Im not sure if they ship to your location though. If not check here https://www.eagletac-store.com/. Im not sure if they have a T100C2 holster though. I know they have the P100C2 holster. I would call about a T100C2.

Don't forget your CPF discounts here http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?t=181841

I think so...

Its a complicated choice.

I'm thinking of getting an...

A2 with yellow/green, red or white LEDs??

And

Fenix LOD for the top pocket and to hand around if someone asks for a light.

AND

Surefire M3T if I can find one second hand and cheap

How's this sounding? I'm not completely sure but I think these might go nicely together...

I'd strongly suggest white on the Aviator, as some color rendering is always nice to have. Red for preserving your night vision is nice, but sometimes you need to read a map. YG has some color-rendering, but as much as we like to knock bad CRI white LEDs, they're all a world away better at it than YG.

BTW, you'll love the Aviator. Everyone does, once they work with it a bit.

Might consider a Fenix TK40 instead of the M3T, by the way. Eats AAs, 630 lumens or so...
