There are many multi-led lights floating around ebay, CPF, etc, that use a single AA. Anyone compare these lights? Do we have a winner amongst them? Which have decent leds, which have too many leds, etc.

I'd grab an Xnova thing, or the 8led one (I like the 5led xnova cause it's all the same size down the whole body tube), and mod it with some of those swell 26k mcd leds!

Even if a light is great, if there is room for improvement I have to make it the best with the best stuff avalible.

regular 1.5/1.7/1.2 cell, no li-ions. No luxeons, either! This is more a function of the light's leds (number and quality), their setup (tubes, reflector, etc) and circuitry (how much current gets to each led, battery draw, etc).

Most probably the upcoming LRI Proton /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Gonna have to wait until June before you can get one though..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My Gerber Infinity is much brighter now that I have modded it. I would say that it is my brightest single alkaline AA light.

My ARC LS First Run is equally bright with one AA 14500 lithium rechargeable or R123, coming off charger at 4.2 volts. Lights entire bedroom easily.

Phazerburn,
I can take some beamshot of my Gerber if you would like?

I will start with beamshots and go from there. Click thumnails to make larger.
The next few pictures are at 10' from the house at f2.8 1sec

This one is 4' from my kitchen floor

Here is the whole light apart

This is a shot of the reflector well before sanding and polishing

Hope this helps aid your decision on this nice little light.

Nitroz, you should post a write-up of your mod. (or is that the one where you have the two pics of the reflector before/after?)

That would not be a bad idea. I did upgrade the 5mm LED to one of the newer 26,000 mcd LEDs.

I really like this topic as I really like my Arc AA. Double the output of an Arc AAA and about 10 hours on a AA alkaline. It lights up a dark room with a ceiling bounce but could use a bit more output for a bigger room. Would be nice to have a 26,000 mcd version.

I also read some good results on the PEAK Kilimanjaro 3 LED Hi Output snow white version. I have two coming in about 2 weeks so I'll let you know. I have Hi hopes for it.

Problem with the Arc AAA and the old-style Infinity is that the LED is potted in epoxy and sealed with a crimp inside the head. Basically all the crimp breaks when you open it (at least in the 3 Infinities I've done this to). The epoxy is hard to remove. In the Infinity the legs of the LED are twisted in a weird way so you'd have to remove a lot of epoxy to change the LED. In the Arc, IIRC, there's a cap soldered to the LED's feet; I'm not sure how this would work with the newer 26000 mcd LED.

Would be interested in your comments. Also, where did you find your Kilimanjaro? Wasn't there also a 5 LED version?

Thanks
