Who\'s email server is bad, mine or hers?

I have Verizon DSL while my friend has Comcast cable for internet services. Sometimes her email messages are delayeed in getting to me. She can send two messages spaced a few hours apart and sometimes I will get the second one before the first. Is there a way to tell which email server is at fault, her Comcast outgoing email server or my Verizon incoming?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that the cheaper Verizon DSL is the same speed or faster for internet surfing. I've tried both and I wont go back to Comcast. Verizon is trully faster.

I helped a friend setup Comcast Cable w/ email. My Earthlink over the years seems to always send and receive without delay. His brand new Comcast account would take an hour or two (~4 months ago). Sometimes a bit faster, but never click/send/receive fast (simple one to ten word test emails--nothing big).

One way to check your email service is to get a free Yahoo account. Then you can send to yourself. The free Yahoo requires you to use your browser (Web Mail), but I don't think that should make much difference.

When I send to myself, it usually takes less than 30 seconds. That's from my ISPs mail service to Yahoo or vice versa. And if I don't send myself mail, then all I get is spam /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

find the option in your email client to view all headers, or raw source or whatever they call it in what you're using.

You can then see the time that the email arrived in and was sent from each server along it's path. It should be easy to see if it stuck in one for a long time before moving on.

But that won't tell you where the problem is, it will actually be a step ahead of the one that kept it. The server trying to send it on to the next step will have encountered an error connecting to the next one and re-queued it up for retry later. So don't blame the server that kept it, but the next one down.

The DNS names are generally reported too so you should be able to see if it's in the DSL or the cable companies domain where the issue is.

Reading those things is a bit of a pain, pull them out and do some formatting in some other app to see it more clearly.

OK, here is the header info sent from comcast to verizon. I just edited out our email addresses. This was sent approximately 8 a.m. EST and I received it around 1 p.m. EST. Can you tell where the bottleneck occured?
