and half the price?

they both do about 120 lumens and run for an hour and have multiple modes.

why pay double?

i ask because i want an edc with multiple modes 😱

and cant see why id spend twice for similar performance?

any thoughts?

When it comes to expensive flashlights, brightness is not what matter the most, but quality and reliability. SF and novatac are good examples, a $15 flashlight can be brighter than one costing 10x, but cant say the same about quality.

I think the D10 is a nice light to start with if you're looking for not-too-expensive multimode EDC. But if it is a super-bright flashlight what you need, buy eagletac or fenix.

The Novatac has 4 distinct programmable settings, and also features Tactical Strobe, Locator Strobe, SOS, and the locator flash for finding in the dark. Granted, you may not have a use for all of these, but they're there built in anyway. You do all the ramping while programming, then the levels are set to where you like. In contrast, whenever you go to instant low or instant max on the D10, you are forced to ramp again if you want another level of light. Also, Novatac is proudly Made in USA if that means anything to you. And the clip comes with the light as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not biased against Nitecore at all, in fact I own an EX10. But even though they are similar lights, you're sort of comparing apples to oranges, or rather, clemtines to tangerines. They're very close, yet also very different.

EDIT - This thread may be of some assistance

im pretty new to lumen addiction,

in 2 weeks ive recieved 2 x romisen rc-n3 (simply amazing for $17, best flashlight ive ever seen....and i got 2 🙂)

a $50 2-3 'D' malkoff dropin (240 lumens) i figured it would be 2 x the brightness of the romisen ( i was wrong, its very nice but didnt blow me away:candle🙂

a $25 terralux for a 2-3 D maglite (i have it on 3 x c cells in a pvc tube in a 2 x D maglite) its almost as bright as the malkoff but blueish in tint)

and i just orderd a d10 golden dragon 😀

hopefully im done till christmas:lolsign:

but ill scan the cpfmarketplace for 'deals' just in case someone has a nova 120 fo cheap 😱

The thing is eyes work on a logarithmic scale, so even when something is scientifically measured as twice as bright it doesn't look twice as bright. You'd be surprised in how little difference there is between 200 lumens and 500 lumens. You can see one's definitely brighter but it doesn't appear to be that much of a difference.

B.I.B. that is a plus for me too. Are all current Novatacs U.S. made? I understand some of the new models due out next year will be made overseas, but what about for instnace current production 120P's?

The D10 and Novatac 120 can be compared to each other exactly like a Corvette can be compared to a Toyota 4-Runner.

Both of the vehicles noted have engines, and both of the lights in question use LED's as their primary mode of illumination.

In other words, trying to compare the D10 to the Novatac 120 suggests that the OP is a hugely long way away from becoming an experienced "flashaholic". :poke: 😉

Waddup, you're going to find that using the "Search" feature will yield very deep insight on questions such as the one you ask here.
The "short" version of an answer is that:
1. The D10 is MUCH smaller, an important consideration for many when choosing an EDC light.
2. They use different battery types.
3. The programmability of the Novatac is vastly different, works different, and gives you different choices and modes of operation than the D10. Way different.
4. Performance claims notwithstanding, I'm sitting here with both my 120P and my D10 set to "high", and I can assure you that the 120P is brighter.
However, more relevant is that their beams are different, and that's also another important consideration.
5. These are very different lights in every way, so you're really going to have to buy them both. :broke:

Are you using a 14500 in your D10? 🙂

Also why compare the Novatac 120 to the D10? Why not compare the Novatac 120 to the EX10, since they both operate on CR123's.

These lights aren't even close to Identical.
The only thing that is similar about them is that they are flashlights.

IMHO this post is seeking permission to buy a D10.
So here it is: Go ahead and buy a D10.
For an inexpensive chinese flashlight that has a unique switch (the PD technology) it is a fine little light.
BUT REMEMBER you get what you pay for.

I own both and MUCH Prefer the Novatac.

May be because OP asked the comparison of the 120P to the D10 like the thread's tittle.
They are different lights and brightness is just one quality among others. My vote is for the 120P they are dirt cheap at the BST now.

I have a NT and an EX10. I dropped my EX10 from about 4 feet onto a stone walkway and it stopped functioning properly (Fenix store took care of me) I have dropped my NT onto the same walkway a few times and it still works fine. I'm not knocking the EX10 but these two lights function differently and really do not compare. Buy both, compare them and sell the one you don't like.
