With Steve Ryan's permission to repost, here's the definitive word why Surefire uses Nye lubricants on their lights.

I researched your question and have the following answers:

For orings we use Nye, Nyogel 799zc which is a thick nonconductive, nonmigrating grease that will not cause the orings to swell and thus break or shear.
For threads we use Nye, Nyogel 759g which is a nonconductive grease that works well in aluminum to aluminum applications.
NOTE*** even though the grease in "nonconductive" it is not an insulator either, The 759g is used on connectors mostly.
Posting these descriptions is okay.

(Note: the 799zc contained in the email above is a typo, the actual Nye Nyogel is 779ZC.)

I know that this has been discussed before, but has anyone ever found a place to order these 2 kinds of lube in a resonable amount? If so, please share the info, because I would like to get some. Thanks a bunch!

Quick suggestion...Goto a hobby store or electronics store, and buy some "switch" lubricant; it works the same way...

I got my Nye lubricants from fewllow-member JTIVAT. PM him to see if he's got any left.

Dan-

Thanks for the tip.

Is "switch" lubricant (Nyogel 779ZC or hobby-store substitute) known to be non-detrimental to the O-rings? I just wonder why Surefire seems to utilize a different lube for the o-rings, suggesting perhaps "switch" lubricant (Nyogel 779ZC or hobby-store substitute) is not best-suited to the purpose.

I can't say enough good things about the Nye lubes. I had all kinds of semi-expensive and semi-exotic lubes around here. No way was I going to buy another expensive goop. But I was convinced by fellow CPFers, and I sent the money off. I'll never go back to my crappy lubes. I threw them out, in fact. The Nye lubes really are superior. They work when you first apply them, and they KEEP working. I've saved a Kroll switch by using the conductive lube on the contact springs. Every one of my lights works better because of the Nye lubes.

One of the canisters of Nye lube i got from JTIVAT is (hand) labeled 779ZC. Did JTIVAT get blurry eyed stuffing it into the canisters all day and just write the wrong number? (I, too occasionally suffer from temporary dyslexia..

) Or are 779ZC and 799ZC two different products?" Or, are there some "typos" going on here?

Is Nye good for twisties? The reason I ask is a bought the new Maratac and I find it hard to engage via the twisting action. It seems like a lot of effort to turn the torch on and off.

On surefires website it says to clean threads and o rings but to lightly lube the o rings only and not the threads.
Both my fury dft and defender that have raw threads arrived indeed bone dry. But both my G2x le and G2x mv black threads arrived lubricated.

So is this because raw threads need to be dry because they form the circuit that allows the torch to work and/or lubricating can cause galling/wear?
But with anodised threads both conductivity issues and premature wear are not a problem so lubricating is fine?

Hi Chip, Lube on threads of twisty function parts nitrolon or anodized imo is a must. Each time changing cells I wipe threads clean and apply sparingly on threads, and lil more on orings. Never had any issues
