Will Surefire E2e \'s clip rust?

I just bought a Surefire E2e and i'm very happy with it. I notice the clip is like those black painted steel. Will it rust?

I cant say for sure but like nascar mine has lost some of it's finish. However, I often keep mine in my shirt pocket where it gets wet (sweat) and despite this there is no obvious rust showing on the clip. Further the type 111 HA doesn't seem too botherd!

Just my own experiences!

I would bet that if it does rust and you call Surefire and complain, they will ship you a free replacement clip.

I've seen NIB SFs with tarnished clips. It doesn't look like rust, but it sure ain't pretty.
Those in blister packs have the same problem too.

Then again, I live in the humid and steamy tropics....

i scrape off all the finishing of my E2 clip, and the whole clip is as shiny as when i first sand it. no rust.

All the way from a very humid country.

I'm going to cautiously say that the clip will not rust.

Somewhere I seem to remember that there was a post either here or on the SFDB that said the clips were made of stainless steel. I think the clips are oxidized or have some other finish.

**EDIT** I just checked the SF site and the clips are made of stainless.

Durian?!

Back on topic: isn't proximity to the sea more of a natural causal factor for rust than humidity?

the kinda metal used on swiss army knives seem to be the only kinda stainless steel that's really rust-proof for most intents and purposes...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The swiss army knives are pretty OK, but if you are saltwater fisherman, you'll know that even these things rust if left for a coupla days when used in saltwater activities without a good rinse afterwards. I ruined my very first swiss army knife exactly this way

i've never had swiss army knives rust on me though...i mean as long as i keep them clean, they're pretty resistant to body sweat, water, etc. definitely more rust resistant that this knife i have that's made from 440C stainless steel

Speaking about swiss army knifes. Any Singaporeans knows if it's legal or not to carry a swiss army or leatherman multi purpose tools with knives as a EDC in Singapore?

Re: Will Surefire E2e \'s clip rust?

spitfire,

Why not ask that in the knives section?

Regarding SureFire PocketClips, if yours is damaged or broken, I suggest you call SureFire. I'd expect them to send you a replacement.

I've never had one rust. Of course stainless steel is stain-less rather then non-staining steel.

Any tools used in salt water (or any corrosive environment) should be washed with clean drinking grade water. o-rings and such should be checked and cleaned. Threads re-lubed and Lanyards checked for damage to the springs in the stops.

Not sure about the tight legalities, but I believe if you are stopped and searched for any reason, whether or not you get held in suspicion is context-based, IMHO.

Say, if you were an on-duty line repairman, technician, plumber or other sort of handyman-type with an obvious need for the tools, you probably won't be under the microscope even if your tool's blade is >6cm(which is supposedly the legal limit for unrestricted on-person carry).

But if you're a pre-U student, secondary school kid, a layabout, or an Ah Beng (especially the Pai Kia-looking type), then you're probably gonna have to answer a lot of questions.

Yes, this is can almost be called profiling.

If I weren't sure, I'd just pop into a police post and ask the sergeant there to take a look at the object and get his honest advice on whether to tote it or not.

Re: Will Surefire E2e \'s clip rust?

well personally i'd carry a regular swiss army knife (i prefer the wenger ones) over a normal folder, as its easier to explain the need for it since it has many other tools besides the knife. i think it would be harder to do the same for a dedicated folder knife.

i used to go overnight cycling, and i carried my wallet, handphone, keys, minimag (i didn't know about surefires and arcs then), and the swiss army knife in a pouch tied to my bike frame in case i needed to do some bike repairs. my friends and i got stopped by the police on occasion for routine spot checks, and after i explained that i brought along the swiss army knife for the screw drivers, wrenches and (mini) pliers, there were no further questions asked. in fact, that would have been ideal to bringing just a screwdriver, as my friend found out when he got his confiscated as it was actually considered more of a weapon than the swiss army knife i had. of course, this is subject to the discretion of the individual police officers so i wouldn't bet on it.

hope this helps. of course, it would be best not to carry a knife around if its not absolutely necessary.

well, profiling is ok with me so long as its employed within reasonable limits and used to help the police with keeping the streets safe, as opposed to using it as an excuse for practicing sexual, racial, religious or other forms of discrimination
