Curious to whats the limit (if there is one) of files (say JPEG &/or Bitmap) being renamed at once on XP Pro? (I usually rename up to 4000 pictures at once on average
Picture (1) Picture (2) etc...

Vista is such trash & doesn't allow Multiply File renaming, (Well it kinda does, but it literally mixes up all the files. It's beyond bad. 2 words: Bill Gates.

So I have to resort back to an old pc with XP to rename multiply files.

So is there a limit? Can I rename 10,000-20,0000 pictures at once. Granted even with a super duper PC it takes long.

any input would be great. :)

I use a couple of programs to rename lots of files and never ran into a limit with win2k:

Flash Renamer and TheRename.

Bit of a learning curve on TheRename, but Flash Renamer is pretty simplistic.

The old ACDsee32 ver 2.42 file viewer program also has a nice simple rename feature built in. There's an old versions website.

You can google all three programs.

I never renamed large numbers of files through the OS, either on Vista or XP. I have used RenameMaster with good results for a couple years though, and it's supposedly Vista compatible. TheRename that NA8 mentioned is something I tried. I don't recall why I didn't stick with it.

Lol...so that's not a direct answer to your question. Best input I have is use a tool designed to let you do your job well on your normal Vista system instead of changing machines just for the one task.

I cannot quite get WTF your problem is because you sound too much like foaming out of your mouth into your keyboard...

You can rename infinitely many files since ever, either under the command shell, windows scripting host or any of the million programs that a simple google query for "file rename" will yield (my favorite is A4rename).

And performance isnt that bad either, typical speed reached for my runs (up to 1M files) is well above 1k/s, as long as the MFT isnt fragmented too badly.

Guess you haven't learned to read correctly yet.

And NO!!! my keyboard is as clean as a Neutrino Detector thank you.:poke:

thanks ppl for the suggestions on other programs :)

I've learned its best to not bother renaming pictures. Think of your drive as a database, in a database there is usually a key field that is just an index field and can be as simple as a sequential number. Think of the file name as that field. Now in database design you don't mix data types in a field so you put dates in one, text in one, etc. Same as on your drive, add the columns for date and time picture taken, comment, etc. Then find a tool that lets you set all those, I use exiftool scripted to do mine.
The reasons I say this is
#1 portability, no longer do you have to remember what characters can't be used in a file name and be sure to not use them when renaming.
#2 no mixing of data in one field, no more of the "picture fo vacation 2008-01-27 08:25:23 with grandparents blah blah blah" in the file name. Instead you have "image1224", "2008-01-27 08:25:23", "grandparents", "blah, blah". This makes it easier to sort by date if you want by just clicking on that column header, or making it easier to index and search.

So basically use the exif data its what its there for, don't try to cram everything in the filename while trying to be descriptive within the limits of a filename and then have to rename everything every time you find out you can't sort or decide to add a new tag.

That would be like not smacking a mosquito trying to suck blood.

And what part didnt you get?
I told you:
a) That you can rename arbitrary amounts of pictures at once
b) that the command line and the windows scripting host offer lots of possibilities to do it
c) I told you the google query that lists 7 different rename programs on the first result list
d) I told you my favority rename program
e) I explained to you that performance is not bad, and that for the 10-20k files range you shouldnt have any problems.

So what exactly is your problem, Mr "2 words: Bill Gates!!11"?
(Hint: how would you do it under Linux? The kernel doesnt do it on its own...)
