Hello!

I just ordered the 6AX with the cree drop in!

It runs on two cr123a (rather expensive) batteries.

Can this light be run on rechargeable batteries to make it more economical? :huh2:

Yea it can be run on a 168A(18650) if you ordered it from Pacific Tactical Solutions you can get the battereies/charger from them.

I've got a 6AX with Cree and I love it. I've decided to go rechargable too. Although I'm very happy with PTS, I ended up ordering two AW18650 from Lighthound for $31.53 shipped and an Ultrafire charger from Kaidomain for $13.48 shipped. I figure I saved around $25 (which will probably go for another light) over the Wolf Eyes setup. In retrospect I should have ordered the charger from Lighthound too. It wouldn't have been much more and I would have all the components at once.

I currently use the Wolf-Eyes Charger/battery config. and i must say that for the 5 months i have used it, it has run great. I have been using them with both the Cree Drop in with my 6A, my 6M, my M90 Rattlesnake, and my new 13v M90. none of them have experienced any failures yet even with the fairly large amp. draws using the incan. I personally feel that the 168A from Wolf-Eyes is a great setup although if you do have other 2 CR123A flashlights you may want to buy the 168B batteries, it will work with most 2 CR123a cell lights including most of the surefires. Though keep in mind that the 168B will have less runtime than the 168A since its size in diameter is also smaller. (2200mah vs. 1500mah)

Dont forget to use your CPF discount at PTS if you order from there.

I actually prefer the cheaper DSD charger to the Ultrafire. The Ultrafire has annoying springed terminals that are difficult to move back for inserting an 18650. I also prefer AW's protected 18650 batteries. You could spend as little as $16.50 shipped for the battery and $6.61 for the charger shipped from Dealextreme.

If you want to use 2 x 3.6v RCR123's, then you will have to use a 9V lamp assembly. If using AW protected cells you can run anything up to a Lumens Factory HO-9.

Edit: Oh, sorry. I just realized that this does not answer your question since you are trying to use the LED drop in. Glen C finally answered it!

If the Cree drop in is rated for 9v then it will be safe to run 2 X 3.6v RCR123's. Just remember to change back the batteries if you use the incandescent lamp. I would personally buy the 18650 battery since it will give you longer runtime, and if you forget to change the battery you will not blow out the incandescent lamp.

How will it affect the light?

new Pila/wolf-eyes charger is substantially safer than most low end chargers available.

Yes you can and you should. Wolf-Eyes are the best stock flashlights to use with rechargeables. They can receive any size of Li-Ion, including the 18650.

Hi,

Could you elaborate on this please. I'm all for saving a few bucks, but not at the expense of safety.

Thanks!

Do you think Wolfeyes will make a multi level light at some point. I'd like to get a 6A but don't know if I'd like a single stage.

That would be very cool. In the meantime, I really like the Wolf Eyes LED tailcap for this. The only downside is that it will only work with an incan lamp. I have one Sniper with Cree and another with incan and the LED tailcap. It's my poor man's A2.

almost without exception low end chargers from china don't truly terminate a charge at 4.2v. but will continue to trickle charge your cell.

New Pila charger will terminate your charge at 4.2v. stay away from old pila charger which were dumb chargers.

pila/wolfe eye cell have overcharge protection. bare li-ion cells is where most concerns about overcharging happens.

do a search for li-ion safety and you will find lots...

Supposedly the UltraFire charger has auto cutoff. If I'd been smart I'd have done a search on the forums before I bought it to see how others like it. I'll do a search for li-ion safety. Thanks for the info!

Sakkath, to answer your initial question, yes your 6AX with Cree can run on rechargeables, if it is the older (February) Cree drop in they have a 3.7-6V range so the 18650 (LRB 168A) would be best, if it is the newer Cree 3.7-13V range you could use LRB168A or 2 x RCR123
