I have a Fenix L2T, a Fenix LOD-CE, a Lumapower 301, a couple of Huntlight 1-watters and a couple of Huntlight 3-watters, a TerraLux SSC drop-in 3D Mag and a red NiteIze Mini Mag dealie.

I don't have a decent incan.

I've been hearing that color rendition is nicer and depth perception better with a good incan and have been thinking of getting one for night use primarily outdoors.

I'm really liking the SureFire 6P (with thoughts toward the Lumens Factory SR-6 - I'm not much of a modder). It's in my budget and I know the SF name means quality and interchangeability (to a point).

I was just checking out the Wolf Eyes 6AX and now I'm undecided (again!).

Is ~$40 really going to buy me a small, quality 120 lumen torch?

Is the 35mm reflector going to give me a nice walking flood with enough throw to spook the occasional raccoon?

How the heck does the optional LED tailcap work? How do you operate the front end with the back end taken up by the LED assembly?

As always, the help of fellow CPFers is greatly appreciated!

well, the color may be better with incan, but the efficiency is lower, so if you really want some punching power, you might consider moving up a size, I recommend the 9A series from wolf-eyes. By going with the 9 series, you can swap to and from rechargeable cells without swapping lamp assemblies. (3xCR123 primary, or 2x18500 li-ions).

What mdocod said!!! I recommend the 9AX raider with lumens factory EO9 and a pair of wolfeyes 18500 rechargeables.

+1 on what the guys above said. 9 series Raider with either the HO9 or EO9 and 18500's, the little extra in cost is definately worth it. Personally i don't think the 6V lights can keep up with the efficiency/output of their LED counterparts. But when you bump it up to 9V then its a different ball game. Personally i use the EO9, it is my favourite combination.

Answer to your question about quality is simply YES (not sure about the lumen rating though).

Can't help with the LED tail cap I'm afraid.

EDIT

I thought i would add some pictures to help with your decision

WE Sniper with 3.7V LF LA

and the Raider with LF EO9

Sorry to the other guys who have endured these pictures before  but i thought at least they might help

Hey thanks, Keeper! I think I remember that yard from the LED lights topics and I really appreciate you including those shots!

I was kinda wondering about the 40 minute runtime of the six volts. I'll definitely check out the nines now though.

Thanks all!

I should just clarify my post i think.

If you go for the EO9 you still are unlikely to get more than 40 minutes runtime, not sure about the HO9, however IMO the extra output (and it is quite a lot more) of the light justifies the shorter runtime.

But when looking at the the 6 series incans they can be pretty much be matched in output and exceeded in runtime by the LED's, so IMO the short runtime is not justified.

In answer to your question on the back end LED tailcap, pushbutton in the back still works. First twist turns the LED's on, further twist turns the LED's off and the main beam on. This feature is really nice because with my WHITE LED tailcap (you can get red and blue also), the light becomes shorter, a little less bulky (yes, the LED tailcap is smaller!!), and you can use it as a tabletop candle for ceiling bounce light in a blackout. It is also plenty for nice close lighting.

As said many times on here.......the WE is a great light, I got rid of my Surefire lights and mainly now use WE lights such as the Sniper, Raider and Rattlesnake in the incan line. Just last night I tried my 1x 18650 with LF D26 EO-4, 2x 18500 with LF D26 EO-9 and 3x 18650 with LF D36 EO-13. It was a little misty and cold but even the EO-4 lamp performed great in the misty condition and put my LED 170 lumen lamp to shame. The LED beam got soaked up by the mist and was only good to light the road in front of me. LED's are ok in ideal clean air around the house and back yard type situations but incans rule in bad weather out bush kind of scenarios.

And btw, the LED tailcap, I use it at home all the time when walking around the house or outside when walking from campsite to the toilets at night, I would not have my WE incans without one.

Right body, wrong lamp. None of the Lumens Factory lamps will provide flood at 2 paces for a "walking flood." For that, you need one of these four lamps:
  • (D26) original Wolf Eyes 9V (2003-2005)
  • (D26) Surefire P91 (my personal favorite)
  • (D26) possibly the 9V that online store that sells dirt cheap--DealXtreme?
  • (D36) RICO Alpha 9, but it won't fit a Wolf Eyes 42mm head (Raider); you'd need an original Pila GL3X (45mm head).

Agreed. The Lumens Factory lamps are the exact opposite of what he says he's looking for, so I don't understand those recommendations.
The current (edit: Wolf-Eyes) 9V D26 is a great choice, too.
Pretty much a wall of light, with a very large spot, and very bright spill.

IMO the spill-light from a powerful throwy incan serves as the flood in an outdoors application inside the first 20 feet or so. The tight spot in the middle of a LF module serves as his throw fun. The spill-beam (unfocused light outside of the beam) on these type of lights is more than sufficient for a walking flood.

another easier option if one really wanted to have a floody beam on a lower powered lamp without tracking down an old bulb or old Pila head, would be to just use a G&P/ultrafire lamp and tighten it down all the way, (move the lamp as far forward in the reflector that the threads will allow). This will not in any way hurt efficiency, (actually, as you move the bulb forward, you GAIN total lumens actually making it out the front, but they just aren't concentrated as nicely in the center, you tend to end up with a floodier beam by doing this.)

You are quite correct is saying that the LF is designed more for throw than flood, but i still think the side spill is more than adequate to walk with. Besides that he already has numerous LED's that would make good flood lights, why not get a Incan that is a thrower (where i think the Incans shine)

Ok, I am seeing this name pop up quite a bit here since I've been poking around. Are they really all that good? I was just looking at their website and couldn't help noticing one of their ads for "uses" for their lights. The first thing on the list is "breaking into houses" Anyone used it for that yet? :naughty:

"All that good" is relative. I just got my M90X - the build quality is nicer than Ultrafire, and (IMHO, based on a sample size of one) on par my Surefires. It's possible that Surefire has an edge - better engineering for greater reliability, better distribution so you can buy them anywhere, better established company for better customer service. Wolf-Eyes edge (for me) is the ability to run D26/D36 lamps on 17XXX/18XXX rechargeables at a lower rice than Surefire.

The Wolf-Eyes official site hurts to look at. Two dealers are CPF members: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2116462&postcount=3

I just ordered a WE 9TX from the WE site. It was $10 cheaper than one dealer's site even with the postage from Canada. There was no way to choose an LED color preference for the tailcap included with the 9TX so I noted in both the order form and the PayPal message block that I wanted red LEDs. We'll see how that goes.

I ordered late last night and it shipped out today. I hope I don't have any problems with Canada Post.

The good folks at WolfEyes have the typical problems with Engrish that a lot of foreign sites do. I will say that the Wolf Eyes site is much more understandable than others.

I'm pretty sure that "Breaking into houses" is supposed to be something like, "Bright enough to serve a LEO who has to kick down a door and get a Bad Guy". :)

At least, I hope it's supposed to mean that...

Well I got the Raider 9TX today.

First thing I noticed was that the envelope WE shipped it in was twice the size of the box so there was a whole lotta room for the box to flop around before the air got squashed out. Luckily, the light didn't get beat up.

Second thing I noticed is that WE undervalued the light on the customs form by $20 USD. Hmm.

First impression of the light itself, even before the batteries are in, is that this is a hefty light.

Unscrewed the head to expose really well-lubed threads. They're so well-lubed that a splat of lube smeared across the inside of the glass just from unscrewing the head.

Second impression, looking at the LED tailcap, I didn't get the red LEDs that I wanted. Got the white ones instead. Darn. As I said in an earlier post, I asked for them on the order form and on the PayPal form because there was no where to select an LED color. Oh well.

Fed it three Battery Station lithium primaries and screwed the head back on - whoa! The lamps comes on and burns my left hand down to a nub. Damn. I liked that hand.

Run the light through its twisties, lock-ons and tailcap pushies and it works just like it's supposed to.

Notice that the hot spot is rather oblong. Due to the filament's length?

I didn't get much sleep last night but I'll try to stay awake to see how I like the Raider in the dark.

Overall, considering that I've had it for all of a half hour, I really like this light. It's solid, the fit and finish is fine with no blemishes and it works like it's supposed to.

Woot!

Thanks for all the input, folks.

If you've touched the lamp you need to give it a clean with an alcohol swab or similar, it's not good to have fingerprints on the lamp.
