Having been nicely impressed by using a 5mm 20-26kmcd LED in a mini m@g host, I wanted to use this host but use a dorcy style step up so the while thing could run on 1x"AA" battery. I saw a device a while ago made from plastic, the following is my 'clone'.
First, the driver board had to be made as small as possible.
Next, a 1/2" dowel rod with the upper end made to fit the top of the MM, and the LED with the top turned down.
Closeup of the business end.
Unit with the booster board installed.
Measuring with a multi meter (I lost the paper) battery current was about 47mA, and the LED current was about 22mA. I do remember the eff. was about 95%
Now I know that this is NOT nearly as bright as a MJLED, but with the low drain, it is perfect for the kids to play with.
Also, I checked some points on a unmodded dorcy and got almost 200mA off the battery and 40ish mA at the LED. The coil I used in my mod is MUCH smaller, and the output is filtered a bit more, should be able to run for awhile.
