Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

Hello S4MadMan,

I am looking forward to a review of this light.

I have heard less than glowing opinions of it and will be interested in yours.

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

Sorry, I can find anywhere to give reasons for my vote, so I'll do it here. HID lights are fine for longer continuous use but not great for short bursts. They take a while to get up to full output. Those with "instant start" (D1/2) have poor efficiency just after start up. They also need complex electronics to run. So I vote "maybe" or a qualified "yes".

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

I say maybe depending on advances in LED efficiency for a bright hand torch. Spotlights yes if Philips would release high power HID ballast and lamps in the 70W range that are rumored but then I would want more that’s just me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif. I like the 4100K color temp HID’s over Halogen nice and bright not to yellow or purple just right for my eyes.

Other than the problem with instant start, yes! Most of the time you aren't "strobing" the light, so they make much better work lights. LED's have a long way to catch up with regard to efficiency. For the foreseable future, I think anything bigger than a 2D and general purpose would be best done with HID's.

Looking forward to the review,

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

I put no only because of the reason already given. From what I understand they are not good for short term usage. I think LED is the future of everyday handheld lights but HID will be the future of spot/search lights. Incandecants will someday be a thing of the past.

There's my nickle's worth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

Maybe: HID with high-output LED's for low-level will likely replace incandescent.

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

I would like to see a review of this hand held. I just puchased an X990 and would like to see a shoot-out comparison.

As far as incandecent- years ago we ran Tung-Sol 9 volt aircraft landing lights in our car's high beam holders. They fit with NO mods! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gifThat drew 30 amps per bulb (Had to use a relay and rewire direct to battery) and only lasted like 3 hours but 10,000,000 CP is really neat in an automobile. Cops did NOT like it though.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

I voted no because of startup time, weight, cost, and it is really more light than than most people need [excepting Flashaholics of course] from a handheld. In an urban environment, too much light can be irritating to others.

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

do not think so, HIDs can break where LEDs will not. efficiency aside this is a very valid point for a non-spotlight torch. and there is price ... argh ...
AND you really do not need that much light normally ...

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

It's finally here. Will get some beam shots tonight.

Supposed: 180 minutes continuous run time! We'll see. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Congratulations on the purchase! Can't wait to see the beam shots.

Re: Getting Tomorrow: Bohmen X995/BF-695

I voted "maybe" for a couple reasons.
1. I can forsee LED and HID technologies merging in the lumen scale, thus making incandescent lights obsolete in this regard.

2. Startup time (except for Xe), fragility, cost, weight...all factors that make HID less appealing, especially to the general public!

3. I could see a fusion of LED and HID technologies in a single light to satisfy different needs at different times. Note that the smallest commercial HID lamp and ballast, the Welch Allyn Solarc, is 10W/500lm, and overdriven LEDs can almost do half that.

4. Electronic components are getting smaller all the time! Ballasts tomorrow may not be nearly as big as ballasts today, and shrinking of the lamp itself may be feasible.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

BRILLIANT, you always have the best beamshots, I guess we have to check back for the sky shots!

THANKS,
