I'm thinking of making a flashlight review site with you, the CPF'ers, as the reviewers. Since I don't have that much money to buy nearly 1% of all the flashlights all of you own, you would just email me a review and I would put it up on my website. Anyone interested? If there is popular demand, I will go one step further and do this thing! I'd like to hear your comments.

Advice number 1. Get a big webspace. With all the beam shots you are going to be posting..... you will need a lot of real estate... oops... it's virtual estate

sounds like a great idea! you will need lots of space though. just make sure that if you take a review from someones site, you have permission and give them credit

Nerd: I've signed up with HavocHost for unlimited space; well, 100 MB per account, with unlimited accounts. I think I've got that covered.

Rothrandir: I'm thinking of making this all original; no extracting from other sites, just CPF user reviews. If I ever do that though, be assured that all persons that need to be credited will be.

By the way: my website is http://cpf.s8i.com/
That's where this will all go on.

Other questions:

1) I need a name for the site. What will it be?

2) I need to compile a list of criteria that all reviews should have. What should be included?

3) Anyone interested in being a graphics designer?

4) Other ideas to make this a true flashlight site!

i'd be concerned more about bandwidth than space; space is cheap, data transfer ain't!

Be aware, too, that anything posted to the web is immediately and automatically copyrighted to the author. You will need direct permission from the author to reproduce their text. This is an issue I encounter on occasion in reproducing Mods instructions that someone posts to CPF. The author has to send me an e-mail giving permission to copy their writing before I can post it to my Mods pages.

And of course, be sure to include links to the "traditional" reviewer's sites!

(Craig, Chris, Brock, and myself) I, for one, would be happy to reciprocate.

the ultimate flashlight review site

i don't know, but as soon as you get a couple canidates, you should post a poll

2) There will be a links section for Craig, you and the rest of the gang. And of course, CPF!

I will post a poll soon.

logic,
how will you judge the accuracy or lack thereof from one submitted review to another if you do not test the lights yourself?
will you accept all reviews submitted and if not by what criteria will you reject a review?
that said, sure I'd vote for a review site..

Well, I will put up any reviews on the same light on the same page, so the readers can decide what lacks and what fills in each other.

The review should follow a small criteria I will make soon enough, but basically, things like description, ease of use, definable things(type of flashlight, batteries used, material made of, etc.), and a section on personal opinion. And a rating, of course. What to reject? Well, I don't know yet. That to come...

A comprehensive review site would be great, but speaking only for myself, I would like to see a comprehensive comparison chart. This is something I have been thinking about for some time, but just don't have the expertise, knowledge or time to do it.

A comparison chart would provide an "at-a-glance" reference which would identify the "author" and link to the author's site for a full review. Brock has a good chart, but there are some lights that are not listed there.

If someone else already has a comprehensive comparison chart on their site, thanks for a point in the right direction!

I think that it will be a challenge to get consistent, comparable reviews if they come from all different people. Consider that it is not too helpful if everyone reviews his own favorite lights and you end up with a long list of "this is the best light ever" reviews. However, the forum is full of valuable knowledge and I think you are on to something here anyway.

Flashfan, this may be similar to what you said above, but I'd like to see a master index
of flashlight models that serves to link the existing excellent reviews from the various review sites mentioned above (this may exist somewhere, but if so I am unaware if it). It could also contain the original reviews you are talking about to supplement existing reviews and fill in the gaps of missing models and modifications.

Actually, if you think about it, this entire fourm is relly a treasure trove of various mini-reviews (some full reviews) that crop up in the various threads and come from a large number of different people, usually in the form of "I have the light you are asking about and these are the things I like and don't like about it compared to this other light...". Your idea would be a more formal version of that and easier to access quickly. Very good idea. Good luck.

Thank you. I will make a link at the top of each flashlight page to other review sites respective pages. I think this should make some people happy.

That was my first thought of trying to make this site. CPF is a huge reviews area, and that's what made me think of this.
