I think this will be ok to post here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I have an original Mr. Bulk Space Needle II. This light throws just an amazing amount of light with a wonderful combination of throw & flood. However, I just don't like the tint of the light. I really prefer a HID tint to just about anything else.

So, I will be purchasing a 5W VYOT (which, I understand, has a nice HID to it) so, I need to hire someone's modding skills to do a LED swap for me. I'd do the swap myself, but I want to make absolutely sure that the emitter is centered and since this is (I think) a Hotlips, there isn't anything to tell me the emitter is centered /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Christo_pull_hair.gif

Please PM me with prices. I would also be interested in selling the old SN II emitter since I won't have any use for it.

Please don't hurt the old emitter by trying to take it off. I'd be interested and will send a new hotlips. PM sent

When I get back from my road trip to Virginia in about 9-10 days, I think I can help you.
Does your maglite's serial number start with a C**********?
If not, You will need an older style heatsink.
I have one of those too with self centering pit in it.

Cy, I haven't touched the old emitter.

3rdShift, I'll check it when I get home. I'll let you know since I'd love to have it back and fixed up in 9-10 days /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

BLG,

You definitely don't want to risk hurting that emitter. Nice bright 5Ws are hard to come by. If you are able to do some simple soldering, you could remove the sink from the light and sell it to cy. The o-sinks make it easy to center the emitter. It's just about fool proof.

I had to make a centering jig for use with the hotlips.

In any case, being able to do it yourself is still a possibility.

I can solder, just not sure about centering the emitter on a hotlips.

So, I'd be more interested in removing the entire hotlips/emitter combo and replacing it with an O-sink and new emitter (with glow powder, of course /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Didn't I read on here though that the C sized O-sinks were all gone?

I'll check on my SN II light and go from there.
Gotta find out if it is new or old style and see what my hotlips/O-sink options are.

If this was made by MrBulk He didn't use the hotlips. He used a custom turned down HS. Take off the head and look at it. I don't think you'll be able to remove it. I think it's press fit into the mag. You might be better off selling it, and starting from scratch.
see here

BLG, I can do it for you for the cost of the parts + shipping.
But it's much more fun doing it yourself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

$10.25 "C" Osink
$35.00 LuxV VYOT (my favorite!)
$6.00 USPS Priority Express with Confirmation
Total $51.25

It looks like a custom HS on the first SN, but I have a SNII which I'm hoping uses the Hotlips (can't remember for sure)

Well, you might contact Hotbeam and see if he has a good 5W he can put on for you. I built my own SNII and bought my hotlips and LuxV from Hotbeam and he was nice enough to mount it for me. And i got an absolutely beautiful Bin too.

Here's my thought, Rather than destroying the great turnkey you got from Charlie, why not just build yourself a SNII Clone like i did? It has to be one of the easiest mods out there using a LED.

Shane

I've already built a couple DD Mag Mods and will build a nFlex Mag Mod soon, but since I have the SN II, I don't use it since I just don't like the tint of the LED.

That's why I want to swap the emitter...

OK...just got home and checked and this SN II is one of the newer styles since it has the C******* number.

So, that means I need a new-style C sized O-sink

One word of advice is that although I don't know the bin of your original LUX V, it would surely have a higher Vf that t on the VYOT, so be careful DD the new one, you'll probably need to add a resistor. Also, WRT brightness, Charlie usually gets some sweet bins and it's posible that you'll be replacing a U/W or maybie even an X bin for a less bright V bin, hence the interest in your old emmitter. So, expect possible emmitter failure if DD the VYOT with 3 123's. You may get a a better tint with the VYOT (but even that's not garanteed), but will probably get a dimmer light.

If it ain't brock don't fix it, and I would just build a new SN as per Hallis's sugestion and if you like it, sell the originsl to recover your costs.

Regards,

Matthew

Anyone interested in buying a LIKE NEW turnkey Space Needle II original by Mr. Bulk? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

BLG,

Just a thought, if size isn't a concern for you. I believe the Space Needle is C cell M@g mod running on 123s. If you don't mind the size, the new one could be a 4 D cell M@g model. If you use a BadBoy converte, you'll be able to run the very commonly available D cells. Or you could convert a 3D light to accommodate 4C cells and use the same converter setup.

I just did a 4D/BadBoy1000 in a 4 D light and...what can I say? It's pretty darned bright.

What's really annoying is that I'm looking for a LUX V like the one in BLG's light. The light I'm building is an older OA2D. I have a custom heatsink on the way. The only ones I can find are VYOT which he wants. I don't like the cold blue color. Oh well
Edit: BTW, that 4D with a boost converter works really well. I just built one using a Fatman. Pretty neat! It has a VYOT and oh yes, it's BLUE. BLG, you should like that color.
