www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

There IS some new stuff there. Nothing in the way of new developments, but rather new discovery about the existing luxeons.

Here is a press release stating that luxeons are now expected to last at least 250,000 (EDIT: Whoops - its supposed to be 25,000 hours - need to get my eyes checked)hours - not the 100,000 hours that even their own info sources so often bandy about.

Interesting.... wonder what other gems I can dig up at their refreshened website!

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Whoa - there's more!

Get this - blue luxeons do NOT form the base of our beloved white luxeons - its them CYANS!!!!!

From the same press release I link above.

So THAT explains the pea-green color more nicely!

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Sheesh - dunno what to believe now - I just checked one of my damaged white luxeons - and its got a blue die alright. (reaching for jar of salt...)

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Off topic - but I have a Q3HW binned white LS/O - can someone confirm that I read the binning docs correctly?

Q - 30-39 LM
3 - 5500-6000K
H - 3.03-3.27V
W - White

Thanks,
-Darin

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Neat! If anyone remembers, that was 1 of 2 LS in my UglyBox light. Well, I decided to cannablize that for some white emitters. This guy is going in a Dorcy 2AA aluminum mod.

BTW - I got this one by chance from Mark Hannah Surplus.

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Yeah, Darin - I saw that box of yours - very nice! I wuz the guy who said it would make a nice companion for those Russian winters
smile.gif
Too bad you had to take it apart for emitters.

Say - are you *really* in Moscow? How hard is it for ya to get your hands on stuff like luxeons? Or lithium 123s and AAs? Sometimes, I take things so for granted....

bah! hotfoot did it again!

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

luxeons are only rated at 25,000 hours now?

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Like Roth said - Moscow, Idaho..heh heh. The state university is here (I'm a grad student there).

Getting ahold of anything here is easy - I even have 768K DSL into our apartment.

About the UglyBox - After removing the LS/Os, I saw that there was barely any connection between the box and aluminum PCB. So no heatsinking going on there. I think I'll save the UglyBox for a 5W white when (if?) they come down in price, or I'm feeling especially rich one day. I'll be mounting the emitter directly to the box, as it'll be better for heat transfer. (I built that thing back when I was a mod newbie).

About the 25K hours, I just read the 1W and 5W emitter data sheets today this is what they say:

1W (all) - 100K hours
5W (all but white) - 100K hours
5W white - 500 hours

so maybe they're slow to update the datasheets or something?

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Yup! Sounds like you have a marvellous one there, buddy!

All I have are Q2KWs and Q1JWs....

Ya lucky dog!

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Moscow, IdahoO? Oh, OK *LOL* - Duh! Just put the dunce cap on me now and gimme a kick in the pants!

I'll bet somewhere in Russia (the REAL one) there's a university named Washington too - there's some post coldwar humor for ya

Back on topic - I don't think they're slow to update them datasheets. I just think their press machine is having a hard time sifting thru and integrating all the information coming out. I'd trust the datasheets more than a news article/press relese anyway. So, have handy doses of salt nearby (as I do) when going thru any of those linked articles on their sites news section - those stories are done by journalists, not flashaholic engineers!

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

Luxeon whites having blue or cyan? I have a couple, and diffraction gratings, and there is a distinct peak in the blue part of the spectrum. Looks reasonably like the spectrum in the DS40 .PDF file. The peak is definitely blue and not cyan, let alone their "cyan" which is more like a "traffic signal green".

One thing to be aware of is that Luxeons come in 2 shades of blue - regular blue (the slightly cyanish usual blue-LED-blue, dominant wavelength around 470 nm) and "royal blue" - dominant wavelength around 455 nm, a deep blue that sometimes looks slightly violetish.

The published spectrum (in DS40) shows an orangish-red peak that does indeed exist and is apparantly from a phosphor component in addition to an apparantly separate and main broadband one. This is apparant from the spectral distribution shown in their DS40. It is apparant that the phosphor mixture just needs some "tuning" to get more of the red peak in order to fix the often-mentioned "greenishness", and it seems to me that they are working on this.

I hope they don't overcorrect and make ones that are purplish! I think it's bad enough how warm-color fluorescent lamps are usually purpler than incandescents!

Yes, I can confirm the LED used to fire the white luxeon is definately a blue. Looks like a royal blue in fact.

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

there are more than 2 shades of blue i believe, for when i called jennifer the other day, she said something about "dental blue" this wouldn't be the regular blue would it?

with this dental blue, i wonder what other colors they have that we don't typically use...

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

If you dig through the datasheets, I think that you will find that the 'Dental Blue' is between 'Blue' and 'Royal Blue' in terms of dominant wavelength. The light output of 'Dental Blue' devices is measured in mW rather than Lumen, and is about 500mW. (This from memory.)

Note that all of the named colors get 'binned' for dominant wavelength, so if you had a good source you could get one of each bin for each color, and end up with quite the rainbow.

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

My understanding is the dental blue is closer to the UV end than the even the royal blue. The dental blue are special rank of RB. They are called dental blue because they have use in the dental industry for curing near-UV sensistive epoxies. We have 4, 1W dental blue units here and they are quite unique. They also cost more.

Re: www.luxeon.com - a new look!

quite expensive indeed. when i called, i asked about the availability of a rb, but she accidentally quoted the proce for a db...$46, twice as much! but it does sound *real* nice if it is even closer to uv...how does the percieved brightness compare to that of other colors?
