So I compared my E1e + KL4 + 1xR123 with a new light I received. I have a PR-T/BB750/X4T running off of 1xR123.

The light output appeared identical. Throw, ceiling bounce and side spill size was same in a side-by-side comparision.

Is it possible I have an X-bin KL4 (4th gen)?

***UPDATE***
The KL4 + 1xR123 I have is very very slightly outdone by the PR-T/bb750/X4T + 2xCR123a.
The X4T still a tiny bit better than the KL4 + 2xCR123a.
The X4T also was slighty better than my Nuwai ALX-352L + 2xR123 (it loves rechargeables)

The X4T wins but I may need a different reference light to compare so I can see what the difference is compared to a normal 'U' or 'V' bin LuxV.

My conclusion is I either have an X-bin KL4 or an overachieving W-bin. COOL!
(or my X4T is not an X4T but concidering who built it and labeled it, I don't call this an option) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sure, if it walks, talks, quacks and tastes like a duck when cooked, I'd call it a duck. X-bins are not unheard of. Based on my observations, my U2 is probably either an X-bin or an extremely overachieving W-bin at the top end of the W spectrum. Either way I'm quite satisfied /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

What characterizes an "X-bin"?

What are the chances of getting an "x-binned" L2, L4, L5 or U2?

I have a LuxIII TXOJ, if I compare it to an L2, L4, L5 or U2, what "x-bin" charactaristics should I be looking for?

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

An X-bin is has a max output of about 249lm. It is a bit brighter than the normal U-bin Lux V's.

Chances of getting an X-binned ANYTHING is highly unlikely. There are a couple of Surefire U2-X out there and for sure some U2-W but some of them may have been modded.

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

Well,

I've got a KL4 head that was built from an X4T peeled from a star by a reputable CPF modder so I feel lucky to have an actual reference. I am being sent another L4 to check against this unit so I'll let you know what characteristics are common. I think first and foremost, the output is the big clue. Color can be variable but massive output is often a good clue.

If this unit checks out, I'll be in the curious position of having three L4X's in one place at one time. Of course, beamshots will be forthcoming.

I hope you know, I'm eyeballing your L4X (the one without all the damage) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

The beam pattern of a KL4 and the PR-T should be different ... if not, something isn't right. The PR-T should clearly outthrow the KL4.

The PR-T has a tighter hotspot. That was the first thing I noticed. I shined them in the bathroom at the same spot while looking forward. Overall light output appeared very close.

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

Well,

I just received S4MadMan'sL4 and man, it's a nice one. Great color, great output. All three are matched in output with the only difference being Ol' Trusty is a little more green in output. I'll take shots tonight.

I also got his Chop Aleph mod and damn, that is one nice light. It's a LuxIII that's postively screaming. Just a beautiful piece of work but significantly more expensive than an L4 even at retail. One of the few custom pieces I feel is worth the money.

And no, I'm not turning to the LED side /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'm going to sell my new L4X and hang on to Ol' Trusty. Aurora needs a new powerpack /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

I've got L4, KL5 and PR/BB750/X3T. I definitely can say that my X3T is a lot brighter than my KL4. My KL5 which I bought from a fellow CPF here and has been hand picked as the brightest/whitest out of 2 dozens of KL5 and again my X3T is definitely brighter than my KL5.

Lux reading showed that I've got 1400Lux with X3T, 1000Lux with KL5 and 600Lux with KL4. I've also compared my X3T and another CPF PRT/BB750/X3T and my X3T is definitely brighter.

So…its either I've got duds L4 and KL5 or over achieving X3T or should I call it XX3T heheheh /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: X4T vs KL4 (4th gen)

Maybe the BB750 is holding it back? Is there a better regulator with massive output (without wreaking the LED)?
