"X5 to the rescue" inspires comparison test with Opalec Newbeam and Attitude

Sort of, you could use old ones in the X5, but you will get more light from an almost dead battery in the Arc LS.

Brock:

Have you ever determined a residual unloaded voltage level on 123 cells where 3 cells spent down to this level would effectively drive a P60 in a P9? If so, how much run time would these cells provide?

Is weaker-cell voltage reversal really enough of a concern that you wouldn't combine a fresh 123 with an almost spent 123 in an X5 for the final moments of a 123? I would almost expect that a sudden further drop off in brightness would signal the weak battery's exhaustion and attempt to recharge from the good battery.

Also, what sort of brightness do you measure with 3 @ 3.6 V Lithium AAs in your Lightwave 2000? I've put this configuration in my two Lightwave 2000's that sit in the glove compartments of each of our cars. It's brighter than I expected. BTW, the 3.6 V Tekcells from the batch you bought seem to deliver considerably more current to 4LED clusters than some cheaper 1996 vintage Tadrians I just bought on EBAY.

Has anyone attempted to take apart an X5 head? Is it possible? Might there be room in there for a custom built regulator? Anyone have pictures of the inside of one of these lights? I would probably own one of these lights already if it were regulated. Darn shame.

Thanks,
Sal

But as Brock pointed out, you probably wouldn't get a significant advantage from a regulated X5

You know I just tried running a P60 in a 3 cell light with 3 older batteries, it was dim, so I put it in my 12PM with the P60. It was bright, very close to new battery level. I used it for about a minute and it started to dim right away. Oh well.

I wouldn't put a new or relatively new battery in with an older one because you can't really tell once the older one has really bought the farm. The X5 with one cell runs about 25,000 to 30,000 mcd, so you would be better off running it on one cell and a blank. It should last a really long time that way, but put out a bit more light then a Arc AAA and a little less then the Opalec or Attitude. I had mine that way for quite a while.
