Sold/Expired XPG modules plus SST-50 -90 & MCE/P7 P60 dropin Modules for Sf product (part 4)

Re: XPG modules plus SST-50 -90 & MCE/P7 P60 dropin Modules for Sf product (part 4)

Dave, can you explain to me why a DD would have 3 or 5 levels? I thought DD was whatever the battery delivers. Why would there be levels associated with a DD Pill?

The direct drive board as explained in the article above is simply a board that allows a PWM to be used to achieve levels while direct driving

This is done by the PWM turning the light on and off faster than we can see to deliver the preset levels. They don't use current or voltage regulation just pulse width modulation or simply turning it on and off faster than the eye to achieve that level.

It is just like using a D2flex board in a direct drive maglite. The D2flex is simply a PWM board.

These are good boards and allow over 6 amps to pass through at 6volts so they do not hinder anything much if any.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave, your last reply made me think of a question. Is the board in your regulated 3 level SST-50 also PWM?

Thanks, Tony

OK so then your DD board with 3 modes... will have 3 different brightness levels, but the 3 levels will scale down as the voltage in the battery goes down?

The advantage being that a DD board can deliver as many amps as the battery can deliver... as opposed to a regulated amount (ex: 2800 mAH) with steady brightness levels until it drops out of regulation??

As you may have figured from my previous questions....I am wanting to be able to deliver 4+ amps when wanted (on a fresh battery) for very short burst... but have the option of turning the light on at a battery saving level also. I don't care if the light level drops slowly at the lower brightness levels as the battery drains. I expect it to drop quickly at the Direct drive PWM 100% setting.

If the 18650 does make it into production, I would love to be able to just get the body so I can use either cell configuration.

Hi

I am not quite sure of wants but depending on battery configurations and condition of host you can get 4 to 5 amps on high. This will take an 18650 IMR to accomplish this as a regular 18650 will draw about 2.5 to 3 amps depending on individual battery. Most batteries will sag fairly quickly.

Medium will run at about 45% or around 1.8 to 2 amps.

It does not take long running direct drive to have heat build up or battery sag to negate the difference between regulated and direct drive in a small host.

2XCR123 primaries also make good batteries for short periods.

Dave,

Got the SST-50 3spd in.

DAMN! That is a ton of light coming out of the business end, and a good quality build! The smooth reflector does quite well with this LED projecting a nice spot with only some extremely minor rings.

THANKS!

Hi

I am glad you like it as I knew you would. Yes the smooth does a pretty good job, as with any smooth a few artifacts but about as good as you see.
Gives it a nice hotspot.

Your XPG is posted and will ship this morning.

thanks

Dave

Look above your post. Dave is probably not reading this as everyone has moved to part 5. Click on the link above.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the throwy XRE R2 with optic which I've finally received after you posted it on 16 Jan - VIA INDIA!!

Looks like USPS dropped it in the wrong box - it's taken a while to get back to England from the subcontinent, now with a stamp on it saying MISSENT TO INDIA.

Looks good and many thanks for the extra flood optic you included!! Looking forward to putting it in my C2 tonight. Like the new packaging / label styles btw.

Many thanks once again,

Chris
