Your thoughts on Malkoff MDC AA

This thread had me digging thru my boxes of "old" lights, thinking I might have a MDC 1-3v head

Sure enough, I do

This is great as I've been recently making sets of "last ditch lights" from M31 LLL's (1CR123, 1-AA, and 2-AA bodies for each) and this was make a great addition

I was thinking I purchased it in 2015, but it seems it was Sept 2013

That's pretty interesting. Do you know what emitter is inside it? The output? Does it run regulated, or just a complete taper (seeing as it looks like it was made specifically for CR123A's).

I'm guessing something very cool white and low output.
That being said, is the run time decent? Or is it just completely eclipsed by a more modern M31 in all ways?

Mine is a 1-2v circa 2016 from gurdygurds. The original body went back to him and i kept it on a Klarus P1A until acquring a recent MDC body.

It's a neutral XP-G2 3/30/130 if memory serves correct.

I really don't remember the specs on it, but in doing a little research it seems it likely is a Cree XP-G2 and the outputs are 3/25/250, which seems correct to me

It is cool white, but for me, Malkoff's cool whites are pretty darn good!

I actually prefer Malkoff cool white for outdoor use, and use his Neutrals for indoor use

I will attach the 2 posts I am getting this info from, as I said I really don't remember

Hope this helps

Very nice!

I'm checking with the friend that I gave the other MDC, about getting back, by offering him his choice of a replacement.

I really like the idea of the 1-3v heads, as I can run them on 1-AA, 2-AA, or 1-CR123!

Is the output similar to the current MDC AA with output levels of .3-8-90 when running a standard AA or Eneloop?

I don't have a MDC AA to compare it with, but off-hand I would say that it is very likely in that range

On an Eneloop, it might actually be less than 0.3lmns

BTW, thanks for helping me to spend my money, now I'm going to have to purchase an MDC AA, and trust me, I need NO help spending my money! 😊

I tend to agree in regards to CCT, though I go neutral (4-5000K) outdoors, and warm (<4000K) indoors.

Malkoff still currently sells the M31, M31L, and M31W. You just missed the Illumn 219B M31's. They had the M31 (still do, only variant in stock), then the M31L, M31LL, and M31LLL.

I asked if they were planning on getting any more, but it didn't sound very certain.

Also, Kosen might be doing some M31's later this year (though, he might be doing amber and deep red thanks to my begging, haha).

If you have any of the aftermarket MD1 or MD1.5 bodies, they're very fun. Also, if you have an MD3 body, that fits two eneloops perfectly, AND you can use an M31 with a High/Low ring 😉
As a nice, fun aside, the M31's tend to run about 25% of their power on a single AA just fine. So, you can buy an M31, and run it AA, 2xAA, or CR123. With some adapter sleeves, even AAA!

I think the M31's are fricking great. (RIP) Woodswalker, he has a video about them, and a bunch of old posts if you search here:

I'm well aware about M31's, thank you, even if I was a little late to the M31 game (Sept. 2010, see below)

Trust me, I did NOT miss Illumn 219B M31 LLL's (unless my purchases of 6 total don't count, on Nov 2023 and May 2024)

I've been using Malkoff's since 2008, they are NOT new to me

I see you got one of those little valiant twisties?

I just need one nice cool white Malkoff MDC head. Hoping a 519a 5700k comes about. I talked to Kosen, they were planning on a 5000k domed model, we’ll see what happens but that would be nice

5000K would be nice. High CRI cool white is really, really interesting, though. I think I still disprefer it, but it looks a LOT better.

I have a 5700K 519A in a Convoy T5, and it's not too bad. "Pure white" is how I'd describe it.

The interesting thing is, for the really cool whites, even a "highish" CRI is really nice. The Acebeam Tac AA in 6500K has PROBABLY some San'an SFS80 emitter that is not quite high CRI, but not low, and I don't half mind that one. I think, at the least, when they look white, versus bluish, they look nice...but those seem kind of few and far between (since people tend to choose cool for maximum lumens versus color rendering, so I think it's a niche market).

Yeah I wish I had whatever LED that's in the Surefire Aviator inside that Malkoff. That thing is pure white, no blue, green, or anything. Just a nice clean white. I wish Genes SST20 5700k was a little higher CRI at least in the 80s. It does do well outdoors though, may have to try it again

Yeah, I have an M61HOT, and it's pretty much the only Makloff I keep that's over 4000K. It's...a very ugly beam indoors, but it really is just fine outside.

I know amongst the high CRI emitters, the 519A is second in efficiency only to the LH351D, but it's NOT that much less efficient than a low CRI SST-20 at 5700K (482 lumens at 1500mA for the 4500K 519A, 585-620 lumens at 1500mA for the 5700K SST-20 - I assume the ); the difference in lumens is likely not visible under most circumstances, while the higher CRI is starkly visible.
