ZL: Inexplicable breakage of frosted lens

Not yet. I will probably contact them this week and see what they say. I would imagine that they have already seen the pictures....

Yup, I think that you will receive stellar service..... now that this thread has been started :D.

Heh heh, a shame it works that way.

just have them install clear lenses then apply stick-on diffuser film.

That's an idea I hadn't considered. For some reason, I have always rejected the idea of using film or tape to diffuse or change the tint on a light. There is really no logical reason for me thinking like this. Maybe this ordeal will push me that direction. I have an SC62w I could experiment on to try and duplicate the frost beam. I'll think on it.

I actually purchase all my Zebralight (headlamps only) with the intention of putting d-c-fix on them right away. I like the beam even BETTER than a frosted version. I was always, and still am 99% of the time, one who does not like to mess with stuff. I want it to work right out of the box. No addons, no flashy gimicks, no nothing. I'm a boring OEM person. But the d-c-fix was too good to pass up. Personally the SC62 with diffuser would be TOO floody, but if that's what you want I bet you'd like the effect.

I'm the opposite. I mod everything. Even small mods (different clip, maybe a random trit here or there) personalizes it for me. And I like DC fix.

What flavor of DC Fix do you guys use.. I think I am going to order some to mess around with.

If I was forced to choose between my SC62w and SC62Fw, the w would be my choice hands down. The SC62Fw was more of an "enquiring minds wants to know" type of a thing. I had come to the conclusion that the SC60/SC62 was the perfect compromise of size, output and runtime for my needs and as a incurable flashaholic, I had no where else to go. So I contacted Zebralight to see if they would put a frosted lens in an SC62w light.

I do like the Fw though, especially indoors. It is like carrying around a 60 watt light bulb with a sweet tint.

DC fix is really good. I use that. Too bad the sc5df is not available on clear. The cracked lenses are pretty shocking.

I don't think you would want a clear lens with it. The easy white LED is a quad die and would have a donut shaped beam profile if you had a clear lens. The floody lens is probably necessary to diffuse the beam.

I think using a film would cut down on light transmission. I'm sure there's no anti-reflective coating on films. You might lose somewhere around 10% of the light, compared to a frosted glass lens.

Then again, you have the option of removing the film if you want some throw.

Sorry to hear it evgeniy. I figured it was just me and JKolmo. I would imagine that if they used thicker glass, they would have to redesign the head.

I wasn't going to revive this thread and was going to see if it had some legs of its own. Since it has been bumped, I have an update on mine. I sent all three of mine to Texas on Sept 9. I still have not gotten them back. ATM, I am not going to share the details.

frosted lenses have AR coating on the frosted side?

I'd remove the lens myself, using a rotary burr if necessary (with a good dust mask), and replace it myself. Maybe their lenses are too tightly fitted or their adhesive isn't flexible enough. Even if you have a more harsh environment or abuse it more than most people, their lenses obviously aren't working out for you and you need something different. Unless they said they're aware of the problem and fixed it.

I have EDC'd both a H51Fw then a H52Fw... they haven't seen any abuse, but no signs of any cracking.

Did your H600F really crack while just sitting?

Currently I'm not cracked any of my H600*** (and I hope, that all my flashlights will be ok). I simply ask about frosted glass.
Oops sorry, I misunderstood your first post.

If this question is directed at me, I am not sure how any of them got cracked. I just happen to notice and when I did notice, I couldn't remember dropping them or anything. The H600Fw was never taken out of the house. I kept it in a drawer of my entertainment center without the headband attached. The H600Fw is a real head scratcher. I am sure I probably bumped it or something but it was rarely used.

The original point of the thread was to see if anyone else had had this happen to them with the frosted lens. The amount of use that my frosted lensed lights have endured is a small fraction of how often I have carried the clear lensed ones over about a five year period of EDC. When I cracked the first frosted one, I didn't think much of it. By the time the third one was found to be cracked, I was wondering if it was a case of them being a little less durable. I figured if someone else had the same thing happen to them but only owned one, that they would have been like me and assumed some freak thing had happened and blamed themselves. From the response to this thread, it doesn't seem like this a widespread problem.

The new drama is that Zebralight has had them for about eleven weeks and haven't answered my latest attempt to contact them. That's around two hundred and fifty dollars in the wind. I have been very patient, in my opinion, so far.
