What is this?

A pewter 2c cell Maglite.
2 strong 18650 lithium ion batteries inside it. (cr123 primaries work too.)
Ultraclear glass lense.
4 WX1S binned Luxeon5 150-190 lumen leds.
4 so20 minireflectors.
A Georges80 D2Dim driver board (which is a grown up version of a lioncub's circuit but functionally the same.)

At least a dozen different and fairly smooth brightness levels.
It dims enough to compare to a cheap keychain light. :p
Brightens enough to compare to a 55 watt cordless spotlight. :eek:oo:

It never seems to get really hot, just warm.
Much of the time, it is left on about half as bright as max for my foot patrols.
Only when I need to look down the back alley does it get cranked up to full brightness for a few seconds to see all the way down there to the end.
Then it's dimmed back down.

True beauty. Lighting technology at it's finest. Only bad thing here is that I want one now!

Re: 600+ Lumen LION KING izz, in-da-house !!!!

Near hid performance with the instant performance versatility of leds.
The 13 watt mag HID's are usually around 500 lumens or so.
This minimonsterquad with the Lioncub's brains is just over 600 lumens at full power but,
very dimmable to save the batteries and increase runtime.
Then when you come accross that dark alley, just turn it up for a minute to look all the way down there.
Then turn it back down about halfway.
It should also be noted that the led tint does not appeare to change at lower drive levels thanks to the pulse width modulation dimming type circuit.
Otherwise these WX1S binned leds would indeed go puke greenish in tint instead of staying nice and white.
This light has been following me around everywhere I go all week, now that it has some "brains" in it.
Again, I have it sitting here by my keyboard at a very dimmed and cool running level as my little nightlight.

Photonfanatic now has VYOT, UYAT and VX1T Luxeon5 leds at very attractive discounts to help get you started at building your own LionKing. ;)
For this type light, the VX1T's get my vote.
Then grab a modamag pts, or quad sink and go from there.
I seriously would like to see you folks do more of these mods yourselves, but I would be more than happy to build a few of these for you if you want one.

The one in this thread will be for sale soon in another area of the forum.
Email me if you have any questions. :)

Very nice (and crazy) ;)
It's definitely HID performance. And also @ HID pricing too with 4xWX1S

Looks nice and bright.
How does the output compare to a Volvo headlight on high beam?
http://www.forward.com.au/20WTorch/20WTorch.html has a beam shot of my tesla 6 versus the head light. Also uses D2Dim but with 6xAA NiMH and low voltage cut off.
The tesla 6 only has 17mm reflectors so not as much throw but a bit more watts.
I am interested in how the larger reflectors compare. I am looking at ways to move upto 27mm reflectors and 18W.
matthew
p.s. my torch get really hot 53C on the head (at 25 ambient), surprised your stays so cool.

Mine will get plenty hot if left on high long enough.
Headlight beamshot.....
I'll get a couple of those tonight at work to give more of a real world idea of what a light like this can do.

Edit:
That is a very good link. :)
Which nimh AA's were used?

Do you have the emitters in parallel? Any idea how much current you are drawing at full roar? :grin2:

I used Energizer 2500 NiMH. Cooked the first set using a fast delta V charger. No delta V when charging fully charged batteries just smoke.

I see you are using D2Dim, I have just finished a high speed current limiter, (buck regulator) which responds fast enough to be driven by george's board.
I used to get 3.5Amps from fresh off the charger batteries, but now can limit it to 2.4Amps.
LDO of 100mV at 2.4A, less as lower currents. Also have on OA left over for overdischarge protection or over temperator protection, your choice. I am using it for over discharge protection. Set to cut the power at 5.4V.

Got hold of a 200Mhz oscilloscope today and check the wave forms and added some compensation to kill the overshoot. The circuit could be refined some more but works well enought to use as is.
matthew
p.s. Let me know if you want the circuit I have not drawn it up on the computer, just freehand.
p.p.s Next job is a built-in delta T battery charger mounted on the batteries to monitor the temp and cut off on delta T. Got a demo board coming, will see how it goes.

Nice choice of batteries. The demo board I am getting will do Li-Ion's as well but would need one charging IC per battery (i think).

The leds are all paralleled.
With the batteries right off the charger, it's pulling 3 amps and then quickly drops off to around 2.9-2.8 amps. (about 700 milliamps factory spec. per led)
It then gradually settles down to around 2.5 amps as the batteries wind down.
These leds were chosen for thier better than normal Luxeon lumens per watt efficiency.
These are around 35-40 lumens per watt, which is better than most hotwire bulbs.
Most hotwire bulbs that can do as good, or better than this, usually go *poof* in just a few minutes or less.

The tricked out mag switch does all the controlling.

Here's all the cool stuff this D2Dim controller board does with this light.
It's a 127 Kilibyte pdf.
Yes, $25 bucks worth of Lioncub brains gets a lot of features. :D

Here's the schematics of the D2Dim "LionKing" driver board.

Do you have any out door shots, perhaps down one of your alleys?

What is the run time on this on high, medium(?) and low?

Excellent job. So, how much would it cost to build a copy of the design? And, as asked above, what are the runtimes like at the different levels?

;)
