Any botanists? What is this plant???

I took this photo about a year and a half ago, and have had no success at finding out what the heck it is.

Heck, I don't even know if it would be considered a flower... The 'petals' seem more like they belong on a succulent, being rather 'thick and juicy' than they seem like conventional flower petals.

HERE IS A LARGER VIEW

Found it in a slightly marshy area at 7000 ft elevation in New Mexico. The ball of 'flowers was about 5 inches in diameter, and roughly spherical.

Been curious about what it is since I first saw it, but I want to use the photo on a product, and think it would be nice to know what it is before I try to con someone into parting with some money for the privelege of seeing it.
