How to remove stock switch/socket from mag D cell light

I am trying to remove the stock socket and switch assembly from my mag85 host in order to do some re-wiring to reduce the resistance it has, and I am so far unable to remove the retaining ring that holds the assembly in place. Does anyone have any special tricks/tools to remove the ring?

Also, I am looking for a bi-pin socket and an upgraded switch if anyone has an extra or knows someone who is selling them.

I did search for both of these items, but had no luck, if they have been addressed in a previous post, please bring it to my attention

I was under the impression the metal ring seen from the bulb end had to be removed. It seemed impossible, so it makes sense that there was an easier way.
